Bikes: "Hildy", a Novara Randonee touring bike; a 16-speed Bike Friday Tikit; and a Specialized Stumpjumper frame-based built-up MTB, now serving as the kid-carrier, grocery-getter.

Bike storage in a city apartment - let's get creative!

My family's about to move to the New York City area - within the city or very close to it. We're leaving a suburban apartment with a garage for bikes for a city apartment that'll probably have very little space for them. One of my bikes is a Bike Friday, and of course a folding bike is made for this kind of situation, but the touring bike and the mountain bike with a trailer and kid seat are gonna be a challenge to keep nearby.

Downsizing my bike "fleet" to one or two do-it-all bikes *is* an option if we save up for a while, but of course I'm not gonna make any decisions until I know where we're living. Oh, and I also have a 3-year-old, so solutions need to be ones that keep bikes away from my little human. Not that I can come up with specific solutions just yet but seeing some creative storage solutions would probably make me feel better about biking in the city.

Where do folks in cities keep their bikes? I assume there are a lot of racks and hooks on the walls involved, but I'd love to see how all of you have managed to come up with ways to store bikes and trailers.

In NYC you store the bikes hanging from the ceiling in the hallway next to the bathroom. I thought everyone knew this.

Actually if you check on Pinterest there are some good ideas on there. Search something like bicycle storage.

It all depends on the configuration of your space. I once had an apartment in Philly that could easily accommodate three bikes without them getting in the way, with no need to hang anything.

I lived in a 2-bedroom apartment for many years.

In the "spare room" I put a loft bed (like the upper bunk of a bunk bed) on the off-chance I had guests, and I put my bicycles and cycling stuff in the space under the bed. I even hung extra tires and other gear from the bed slats.

I'm interested in seeing the replies as well. I've got 4 bikes in a 2 bedroom apt and, since I'm on the first floor, they can't go on the patio. I'll check out Pinterest (not sure why that didn't already occur to me), but I'm curious to see what others recommend.

I hope it is not an apartment like this because if it is you are kind of screwed.
