This isn't a 23", is it?

I'm looking at a bike and trying to determine it's size by picture. This appears to be like a 21" Coda, not a 23". Looks like they didn't cut the factory steerer length on the fork. Owner says there is no size tag in the tubing.

The head tube length is a more reliable guide than seat tube length. Looks like at least a 23" frame, per the long head tube.

I agree. Per headtube length it sure looks like a 23” frame to me.

Looks like it is a 2006 Model. I would like to ask the owner to measure it but I think they wouldn't know how to properly do that. I'll see if I can arrange to go look at it. I was looking for this bike BTW, but it seems like it isn't a 23'er to me and I need the max size for that model. Could be wrong though!

Since it has a sloping top tube the frame "size" would be measured virtually. In other words, draw a line from the top/head tub junction parallel to the ground back to the seat tube.

I don't tend to pay much attention to what the mfr. STATES the size to be on a bike I can test in person. If you ride it and it fits, then it fits, regardless of what size is stated. You say you're looking at it, so I'm guessing in person. But why did someone take the noodles out of the v-brakes?

They were just noodling around.

According to this, a 2018 (as far back as it goes) Coda 21" has a 150mm head tube, while a 23" has a 165mm head tube.
Geometry Details: Jamis Coda Sport 2018 (geometrygeeks.bike)

The best way to judge size is relative to the wheels ..... I'd be surprised if that was a 23-inch frame but maybe. The frame is long for its height, (based on the photos, which means I am only estimating) and maybe not tall enough for a very tall rider .... the seat post is a dropper apparently, and is extended apparently .... so the rider must have been very long-legged---for the frame. Stack of spacers says the same .... but looking at the proportion of the wheels and components to the overall bike .... I am not seeing an 2X-large (23-inch) sort of frame.

Seen this; https://www.bikeforums.net/hybrid-bi...t-21-23-a.html ?

The fellow is available this Saturday and I'll see about going to have a looksee then. Might be a waste of time though, as I'm in agreement that this frame is not a 23".

Jamis lists this frame as Reynolds 520 for the 2006 model year.

That should resolve it. I find effective TT easiest to measure.

Probably a 23" in mountain bike sizing which means XXL, whereas a 23" road bike would be L

According to the Jamis website geo images the frames are measured center of the BB to the top of the seat tube(C-T for short), which is quite common. The owner can check this themselves using a tape measure. That said, there's so much more to bike fitting that just the seat tube size though.

From what I have seen, the early Coda frames are smaller in a given size than the newer ones. I've seen it discussed on BF, too.

Not sure if this helps, but here's my 21" Coda Sport for reference.

Thanks for the photo reference Ralph. It seems that the target bike is a 21" by comparison. Doubtful it is going to fit a 6'4" rider. But, what's strange is that the 2006 Catalogue shows the 21" model as 21.5" in the geometry section and also a 23.03" top tube. I mean, a 23" top tube is ok for this guy on an old hardtail mountain bike. While the 23" model frame has only a 0.4" increase in top tube length. Some taller riders like riding a compact frame for it's zippiness just so long as the reach is suitable.

Confirmed in person; 21"

As bigjohn alluded to these frames do seem small. Decent top tube length though. I'd definitely need their 23" (and even bigger than that if they had one).

People really seemed to think that’s a tall head tube.

I saw that when comparing the geometry of the older frames on the Geometry Geeks site to the new geometry on the Jamis site. At some point the frames got bigger with the same named size.
I also read that on BF, that the older Coda frames run small.

Are there any tall riders commenting in that thread? I'd like to hear what they say about riding a 23". If I can't ride the Coda, oh well. There are other hybrids out there of course. But, they are apparently a nice cheap ride.
