Cannondale R300 CAD2
Hi:
I am looking for suggestions on how best to update my bike and keep it in good running order. For example: The large ring on the crankset is old and worn. While serviceable, I would do well to replace it. Can I get the single ring or do I have to buy a new crankset? How often should I take it to be tuned up (bike shop says every 3 months, but this seems excessive and a money play)? Best road set to consider, if I decide to replace it all? Best places to look for parts? And so forth... Happy Holidays and thanks!

Chainring should be replaceable on its own. Match the BCD, or bolt circle diameter (probably 130, but check), and tooth count (unless you wish to change gearing). As for tuneups, I usually recommend about once a year, depending on how much you ride. If the bike is new to you and you’re not a mechanic, it’s probably worth having a shop check it over.

But if you do those simple things at home, you don't need to bring your bike into the shop that frequently.
As for your chainring- it can be replaced or ycou an replace the crank. Your choice.

you can definitely have some fun with it. I had one, and whle the RSX groupset is pretty good, actually, you can put more modern stuff on it too. Like others have said if you do some simple maintenance yourself you don't need to take it to the shop very often.
but if all the parts on it are original, you definitely want to replace the brake and shifter cables and the chain for new. if you aren't a DIY guy then this would be the optimal time to upgrade certain parts as well because it's best to replace parts like levers & cables at the same time.
I had a R300 Cad2, and I did 2 different builds with it. Both were a 1x (got rid of the original crank), but the first build was a flat bar and then the 2nd was a regular dropbar, but with new shifters from Microshift.
Here's the original as it was when I bought it from FB Marketplace
and here's what I did with it:
