Looking for recommendations on products that will extend, (not shorten, so Armor-All is out) the life of black rubber brake hoods.
My hoods are slightly sticky.
Will the product you recommend make the hoods more sticky, less sticky, no change or slippery?

In my experience, once they start getting sticky, there is no help for them as the rubber is degrading. You may have some luck brushing them with a liquid latex product (you can find this a mold maker compound). Have you tried to coat them with talcum powder? This may make them marginally better. I would not use Armor-all because that would make them too slippery. Wearing gloves may help, too.

Make sure that when you ride you dont get sun screen on hoods or handle bar grips., it absolutely attacks them and makes them sticky..

Maybe no one you have come across. I've seen a few attempts of this over the years. One was really nicely done, the other I specifically remember was very crude. Both back when the lever hoods were more box like and less 3D in their contours. Andy

I've often wondered if they sell replacement hoods-just the rubber cover? Shimano Dura-Ace.

They do sell stuff depending on the era. I know Shimano still makes some for 6400 series stuff which may fit 7400 (I haven't yet checked but it does fit the 6400 quite well) Sometimes you can find stuff from Hudz and others that were from newer Dura-Ace and Ultegra stuff but pre-11 speed.

I usually try and clean up my hoods with mild soap and alcohol and that seems to make them a touch less sticky.

This worked well for me on a sticky pair of grips, along with other degraded sticky rubber items.
Clean well with rubbing alcohol, let dry, then rub in a generous amount of baby powder, then wipe off the excess. Works well for me, and grips haven't become sticky after a few hundred miles. Might need to reapply in the future, time will tell.

Also, as others have said, avoid getting products such as sunscreen, bug spray, chain lube, etc on any rubber items.

Someone in the Classic and Vintage thread posted about using Plasti Dip Aerosol spray on some sticky hoods. I don't remember if it was successful.
