Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Looking for a new heart rate monitor

I've gone through a few Garmin monitors. Kinda tired of them failing in the middle of a ride.

Any other suggestions to pair with a Garmin 1000? Just looking for heart rate.

Consider a wrist type like Mio Link.

Are you talking about chest straps or the readout? What exactly is failing? If I have problems with my Polar strap they come early on, but wetting the strap and my chest minimizes the problem. You can also use gel for even more reliable readings if the wetting does not work.
If you want an actual, accurate HR reading you need a chest strap. What you get from wrist units is not comparable. The day they perfect that technology I will gladly jettison my chest strap

They are awfully good. Even if there were a small accuracy issue, and I don't admit to that, exactly how would that affect you in an important way? The upkeep is much simplified compared to chest straps. The durability if far better. No wetting needed. Very rare random cut outs.

4iiii Viiiiva. Is not only an HRM but also has the ability to be an ANT+/Bluetooth link...allowing existing ANT+ sensors to be used with BT only phones/head units.

Sorry, yes chest strap. Yesterday I was on a short, but intense ride. I was plenty sweaty. It worked fine for the first 2 hours, but then stopped reading altogether, then displayed impossible numbers like 80 or 85. I was really disappointed not to get readings at the end of the ride.

I've only used the garmin straps. I really like my running one with the running dynamics, but for the bike I'm just looking for a reliable heart rate chest strap.

My Polar strap and gizmo that does the actual reading are attached via snaps. I did not regularly take them apart, but my brother, who has used the RCX5 for a few years, suggested taking them apart after every training. Having done that, and properly wetting them has given me problem free performance. You may also be experiencing radio interference. It has happened to me, and at the same location. You may want to check that out and whether you can change frequencies.

The latest version of the Garmin strap is very good. Looks like this:

I have been using the Wahoo strap for about a year. It is bluetooth and ANT. When I was pairing it with my phone, I had it occasionally drop and then reconnect now and then for only a sec. or so. Not sure if that was the phone or the strap and was with the bluetooth connection. I no longer use my phone and it pairs with my Garmin 500 and has worked flawlessly, no disconnects and the Garmin recognizes it right away. HTH

The really old school plastic Garmin strap has worked fine for years and years -- except for the high readings before you're warmed up on a dry day if the jersey flaps, but it's never cut out or given strange readings once the sweat is on.

I've been using the strap shown in post 8 for a year or so. Very good results, never fails. Polar straps are also very good but fail after a year or so. No big deal - $17. You buy tires when they wear out, right? The transmitter itself will snap into either a Garmin or Polar strap. Also try using gel on the electrodes. Spectra Gel is cheap.

I usually don't ride with one put use the Garmin on the trainer. I've experienced similar when the sensor doesn't stay perfectly contacted with skin. I've found that wearing an UnderArmor (or similar) tight fitting top helps the sensor keep contact. I know this shouldn't be needed but it seems to work.

I just got the Wahoo TickR and like it better than the Polar. The Wahoo connects with both my Garmin and phone almost by itself. The Polar needed Tech Support, which was horrible and took a week!

I've used the Wahoo Tickr (chest strap) for 8-9 months. Never had an issue & syncs fine with my 6+. Before that I used a Polar chest strap (and wrist strap) till the battery went dead & not-really-replaceable unless sent to a case *******.

I had nothing but problems with the Garmin as well (four of them, in fact). Switched to the Wahoo TICKR and have not had any problems. Highly recommended.

+1. I'm waiting for the strap I got with a Garmin 305 to die and it just keeps going. I replace the battery maybe once a year but never have any problems with cutouts. I've used the strap with a 305, 500, 800 and now 520. Must be over 5 yrs old.

I've got a Mio Fuse and it's fun, but it turns itself on and off when you don't want it to, and changes display functions requiring you to push the "buttons" with your other hand... rather frustrating.

I switched from chest strap to watch and I'm not going back. My watch is a dedicated unit though, which does broadcast to an edge unit if I want it to. So, not what you're looking for. VivoActive HR

Are you using the newer style Garmin chest strap, or the original plastic style? I've never experienced this with the older plastic strap.

I just replaced my original one after 9 years of use.
