Drive Train/Hub Question
I am building a commuter/gravel/light touring bike. I am using a Surly Straggler frameset, and would like to use Shimano Ultegra 6800 11 speed or Ultegra 6700 10 speed (I have access both). I would like to use a wheel set with a SRAM XO or 900 hub, or something similar, yet I'm not sure about pairing road components with a hub intended for mountain bike use.
I will mostly use the bike for commuting and light trails, and maybe a weekend trip.
Is it okay to proceed with the build I am considering. Or, is there a more specific hub that will work with the groupset I am intending to use? The rear spacing on the Straggler is 135 so that is definitely a consideration.

It's fine. Just make sure whatever hub you get has the same OLD as your spacing.

There’s a difference in cassette/body width between road and MTB 11-speed.
If you want to run an 11-speed road cassette, you need a hub suited for that.
A MTB 11-speed cassette OTOH can fit on a 10-speed body.
If you want to run an 11-speed road cassette, you need a hub suited for that.

An Alfine 11 speed IGH is also 135, and internal gears run in oil.. disc capable, cogs cheaper than cassettes , in the long run...

Thanks for the replies. I probably should have provided more info up front. I am using the following 6 bolt disc hubs with 135 QR spacing on the rear and 100 QR on the front. They are attached to Stan's Grail rims. I plan on using either the Ultegra 6700 10 speed with a 11-32 cassette or Ultegra 11 speed with the same.

To confirm with both of these quotes, neither the X0 nor the 900 rear hubs will accept a road 11 speed 11-32 cassette. Your only option would be the new Shimano CS-HG800 11-34 cassette for those hubs. It uses the same technology of spacing the largest cog over the drive-side flange of the hub as Shimano's 11sp mountain cassettes.
In reality, there are options for getting smaller tooth count cassettes to work on a 10sp freehub, but they cost more than most are willing to put on any bike let alone a commuter.
It sounds like the wheels you have are going to limit you to Ultegra 6700 if you are deadset on the 11-32 cassette.

Yes, the wording they use for the freehub options includes "Shimano/SRAM 8/9/10/11(road)" so they appear to be compatible with both Ultegra 6700 and 6800 (and the new 8000) cassettes. I would confirm with the company before buying the hubs though, as to me the language is not explicit in the 11 speed road compatibility. It could very easily be a typo.
