Sorry for reviving the thread, but I'd just like to recommend using an impact wrench/driver for things like this. The impacting action reduces the (effective) reaction force (that you have to resist) very significantly. Here's an example:
You can see that not much happens even after the puller actually hits the axle and the driver starts applying torque. The crank bolt went out even more easily than this.
And it works even better for removing cassettes. I haven't tried this driver yet, but my 1/2" gun will undo the lockring in about a second without requiring a chain whip - all it takes is a carpenter's glove to protect against the teeth. No chain whip = no slipping = no cut hands.
The only downside is that most bike tools aren't quite impact-ready yet and will wear out quickly if used this way. But if something is to be destroyed I'd prefer it to be a $5 crank puller rather than my hand!
