Oklahoma members?

Looking in this sub-forum, I've notice there isn't much activity.

Any other Okies on here?

Where do you prefer to ride?

OKC here.

Nice, if I make it up north I will have to check those out.

My local routes are primarily Lake Hefner, Lake Overholser and West River Trail.

I've been riding in the Wichita Wildlife Refuge. Any recommendations for places to train for cyclocross around Lawton?

I used to ride Hefner on a regular basis when I lived nearby. The distance from my door, around the lake and back to my door was 10.0 miles. Nice. We moved further North and I mainly just ride a few miles in our subdivision. It's too much of a pain to haul my bike somewhere to ride it. Maybe if I worked up to longer distances it would be worth it.

LAtely i've been doing far more MTB rides than road

I ride at Bluff Creek as much as i can on the north end of Hefner - its a relatively easy trail without the sand that a lot of the trails have --- Other than that, i ride the Draper trail system . Road rides are typically loops around Draper lake due to the volatile nature of cycling solo around semi rural Oklahoma.

I hear you. I rarely pack up the bike but part of that is being so close to both lakes. I would like to venture out more but probably not until spring hits.

@DMC707 I've yet to mountain bike. If I have to go off road for some reason I use my cruiser for now. Then again I'm pretty new to cycling.

@reed523 This summer I may have to check out Perkins. Along with other areas around the state.

Anyone biked around Okc after the ice storm? I took picture taking tour the day after. It was crazy. Overholser trail is completely blocked off by fallen trees right now in at least one spot between Route 66 and the boat house. I haven't ventured up the west river trail yet.

The wife and I are both relatively new to cycling (both roadies). We are in Norman and mainly stick to campus (she works for the university and we get housing as part of her contract). I know I am planning on riding the Wheeler Criterium and possibly the OKC ProAm if I can make the progress between now and then. I like hitting the roads heading out of town. Occasional hills, very little traffic. We are both from up north so we are just floored with the weather at the moment. We aren't really used to more than 5-6 months of good outdoor weather for biking and such.

Welcome to Oklahoma. The weather is always weird here but seems like it's been unseasonably warm this year. I'm certainly not complaining. Yesterday was a beautiful day for riding, thankfully the tornado watches didn't pan out.

Thanks. I used to run/swim competitively until I got sidelined by some serious injuries. My wife is already a much better cyclist than I am despite never having been an athlete before. I'm hoping the weather will allow me to get in the extra training I need. I'm looking forward to being able to commute to work. Lord knows I need every advantage I can get, and a lack of snow/ice is definitely a big one.

I live far NE in Miami. Mostly I ride to/from work, though when I can I wander the county roads outside of town.

June 4 I hope to ride the annual Biking Across Kansas ride. But first I have to decide whether I'm brave enough to put in 60+ miles/day on my very heavy '76 steel frame; I'd also have to get drop bars and a new saddle.

Just noticed this. I live in Tulsa and ride mountain only. Turkey is the obvious #1 choice. I've only ridden McMurtry in Stillwater and Draper otherwise.

Stillwater has beautiful and diverse trails, I enjoy it a lot. Draper was winding and fun (but the sand. Ugh...). Turkey is far more technical and has the most options.

Those are my take on it, at least.

Glad to see there's some others around here!

No posts here for a while, but I'll go ahead and throw mine in.
I live in Norman, east of the OU campus, so it's very easy for me to ride the rural roads east and south of town: the Norman, Lake Thunderbird, Slaughterville triangle. My brother and elderly parents live near Lake Hefner and I work three days a week in Edmond, so I have kept a bike at my parents house to ride around Lake Hefner with. I plan to do more of that next year.
For anyone in the area, the Bicycle League of Norman (BLN) is quite active (they have a facebook page) and both BikeOne and Buchanan's organize rides much of the year. There is also a Bicycle Rides of Oklahoma facebook group.

I rode east of Norman one time and wow, did those little hills break me down quick! Lake Hefner and the Oklahoma River trails are great places to ride, and I usually get out there about every other weekend. Rode w/the crew from Buchanan's a while back, but I don't think group rides are for me; too used to riding solo. Also, many other rides organized on BLN's FB Page, etc. are quite fast paced, 17-20 mph on almost all of them. I like to ride, not race and compete.

New to the forum. I'm in OKC and ride almost every chance I can get. I try to ride around Hefner when it's not blowing 25+ MPH. Good ride! I just rode from my office (close to 44th and MacArthur) to almost Piedmont last night - probably the best ride I have ever done before.

Last summer we moved to Moore so my routes have changed to more road cycling. I did a ride awhile back from NE Moore to around Thunderbird. You are not kidding on those hills down there!!

Just joined the forum this week and saw this group. Just bought a new bike, mainly for riding to work. Live in the Tulsa Brookside area, so aside from work will usually ride the river trail.

Something I learned last week, if you ride the river trail south of 71st, the River Spirit casino now has a place you can park your bike and get a cold one at the poolside bar!

Another okie here, I live about an hour east of Tulsa. Used to ride mainly road for a few years then started mountain biking. My son and I used to race the OK mountain bike race series. In fact, one year that we were able to make all the races he won the junior class undefeated. I'm not quite so fast. Now after a few years of being off the bike I bought a new road bike and have been enjoying it very much. I still have my mountain bike and that will always be my favorite but road riding has its own beauties. I've probably been on about every trail in OK and NW Arkansas, my favorites are Devil's Den AR, Turkey Mountain Tulsa, and 12 miles of hell in western OK.

Hello,

I was offered an opportunity to relocate for work, which would take me from Wichita KS to the OKC area. My wife and I were looking at the Bethany area, work is somewhat south east of Yukon.

The primary question: is cycle commuting accepted there well, or will I be a new large decoration on the front of a truck? I am very fortunate here in Wichita with how my commute is (5 very do-able miles, low traffic volume 4 lane rd, not completely hated).

Thanks for your input. Doing some research on routes, and it looks like there are some decent paths, but commuting has been my primary use for cycling.

I was born and raised in Bethany. In fact, my brother is the current Bethany Mayor! (I don't trust him! ) Personally, if I was working close to Yukon, I would move there instead of Bethany. If you have kids, Yukon has a MUCH better school system.

If you do decide to live in Bethany, you'll probably end up riding around Lake Overholser to get to Yukon. During the non-winter months, I think you'll find a lot of riders around the lake. The only other ways to get from Bethany to Yukon are on 39th street (Route 66) or NW 10th. Both of which have heavy traffic and little-to-no shoulder to ride a bike on. Also, as far as I know, there are no marked bicycle routes or lanes in Bethany or Yukon. Yukon is also a growing community with better street maintenance (more available $'s) whereas Bethany is surrounded by other communities and is unable to grow past it's current size (i.e. a stagnant economy).

If you do move to Bethany, I would recommend the SW area around 23rd and Rockwell.

Northeast Oklahoma

Moved to green (Grove) country early December 21. Started riding a bit this spring. Grove is not bicycle friendly ;-(. I did ride the Dam Jam in Pryor and that was a lot of fun. I have ridden in Joplin, Tulsa and Bentonville/ Rogers areas. If the country hasn't gone to sh@t I will explore Oklahoma in the spring.
