Trying to determine Fox fork travel...

I bought a bike used and I'm trying to figure out what the travel on the Fox fork I have is. Is there a way to tell beyond the "let the air out of the shock and measure the travel" approach?

I feel like measuring the exposed stanchion or some sort of serial/part number lookup would do the trick. Any input into this information?

I did the "air out of the fork" approach but the results were inconclusive: 4-1/8" travel is what I got, which leans towards 100mm, but I was very much led to believe it was a 120mm fork so I wanted a second opinion.

Any help?

What year is it? I seem to remember that some Fox forks could be adjusted internally to reduce travel. And I'm assuming it is a regular Float, not a Talas.

You can always try contacting Fox, if you can find a serial number they should be able to help you.

Another thought: measure the axle to crown length and compare to Fox's charts. Again, you'll have to know the model year.

Yeah, it's a Float. I'm not sure on the year. I THINK 2013. It's off a 2013 Trek Stache, but the guy bought the frame and built it himself.

Then try measuring the axle to crown. It should be 521mm for a 120mm fork and 501 for a 100mm fork.

But if letting the air out you get ~105mm of travel, it sounds like a 100mm fork to me. Again, I think those forks can have travel adjusted internally so it could be a 120mm that was set at 100mm.

I'll check that axle to crown measurement. Thanks for the tip.

Out of curiosity, did you find that in literature somewhere or is it just a bit of information floating around in the 'ol noggin??

If the former it sounds like something I'd want to get hold of. If the latter... well... all yours.

I got it from the Fox website. Just Google "2013 Fox Fork axle to crown" and it should get you there.

I typed in the ID code I found on the fork (CC3K) and it tells me it's a 120mm. I still don't get why I'm getting that weird travel number.

I suppose there could be a travel reducing spacer in there, but I have to take the thing apart to check that.

Anyone with a Fox Float XXXmm travel able to take all the air out of their fork and give me an actual travel measurement?
