Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

New seatpost clamp arrived the other day while I was headed out of town!!! Ye olde Salsa QR dealie just wasn't holding. Hopefully the dual clamp setup is just what the doctor ordered.

Hey @MoAlpha, did you see my cramp posting earlier? I am confident that the cramps I get periodically (including yesterday) are what they classify as "muscle fatigue" cramps. I kinda DON'T think they are an electrolyte or hydration problem, as I have had hotter rides, longer rides, and borderline dehydration rides with NO cramps. These are cramps that come on several hours into a HARD ride. But once they hit, I have a tough time continuing to ride, even at a reduced effort. I know some studies say this is not really a "muscle" problem per se but a nerve issue, and the latest treatments/elixirs are targeted towards certain semi-caustic agents that cause a reflex response to the motor neurons. I have not tried anything and would prefer to PREVENT the cramps, but treatment is also a consideration.

Any thoughts?
Sorry, I missed your earlier post.

The association in the lay and clinical mind between dehydration/electrolyte problems and exercise-related cramps is as tenacious as it is meritless. As you suggest, current theory is that the mechanism has something to do with a fatigue-related imbalance between the inputs to the spinal segment of a. the tendon organs, which sense muscle tension, and b. the muscle spindles, which sense muscle length. The spinal circuit responds to tendon organ input by inhibiting the motor output to the muscle (reducing tension) and to spindle input with activation (reducing length), as in the knee jerk. In cramps, the influence of the tendon organs seems to be reduced and the muscle output becomes hyperexcitable.

All I’ve seen as far as prevention is concerned is stretching (meh) and optimizing one’s mechanics (duh). Since cramps are associated with (relative) deconditioning, you can also try to HTFU.

I had the mother and father of a hamstring cramp today, just as I was settling down for a nice nap.

Understood. This nostrum (love that term!) promises to work against these overuse cramps.

I have not tried it, and am always skeptical, but also open-minded.

Any thoughts??

Ah, the pickle juice theory. Sure, something like that could work, but let’s think about this for a minute. If this really produces an inhibitory effect on the segmental motor output, that could be like riding on baclofen or something. I mean, those reflex loops serve a purpose.

Also, having spent a career intermittently trying to invent new treatments for disease, stuff seldom works.

Bread and Butter pickles with Ghost Pepper flakes in them nightly. Dunno if it helps, but they taste good. I will say that when I get a cramp, it's the devil itself. So happy they're very rare.

Enough of this "heat ending soon" talk. I have yet to shovel heat off of my driveway.

I'll be happy enough to dip out of the triple digit highs, and maybe get into some lows around room temperature or so.

Yeah, actually had a good afternoon breeze and wife said it was too hot to sail, or, more particularly, to put the boat away afterward.

I do pretty well in the heat and fear the cold, but there's no cooling in our section of the building this morning, which is not going to work at all.

You know the guy in your neighborhood with the psychotic, eyesore "landscaping," the hideous, un-drained, sagging, DIY retaining wall, etc? Well, today I saw him raking yard debris into the storm sewer. If there's tropical activity here next month, I hope he gets flooded.

The dew point here in Philly was 74 at 6:30 a.m. One more day of this. The weekend is supposed to be much cooler and drier. Hoping to get away for two days of car camping and ride the Lehigh Gorge Trail.
