A neat old Carlton passed through the Atelier this weekend
A big, tall fella that many of us in the PNW know has a pretty large collection of C&V bikes. A 25" CTC frame is actually just on the small size for him, but as he's into vintage, it's often the biggest frame he can get in a particular model. I've done some small jobs on a few of his frames in the past. In this case, he bought a late 60's Carlton frame on eBay that had some smal items to fix, so it was direct shipped to me. The drive side dropout had a weld repair, we had hoped to redrill and tap for adjuster screws, but I'd be drilling right through the weld, so passed on that. There was a large dent in an odd place just behind the bottom bracket, but not where you'd normally see a kickstand do damage. Since it was cosmetic only, I cleaned out the area and filled it with some JB weld, filled and sanded it smooth. The seat lug was a bit squished, so I massaged that back round and proper with a seat post sizing tool. If this frame were given a name, it would be Beausage.
Very thin bottom bracket "lugwork" You can barely see the repair on the drive side under the chainstay.

I was going to look up the lugs and ID the model, but I figured it would be more fun to listen to our resident Anglophiles comment.

RiddleOfSteel lives not too far from the buyer in the Seattle metro area, and had a job of his own for me to do, so it'll be hand carried up from Portlandia this weekend.

To me this would be an irresistible frame. The Haden Birdsmouth lugs and the DB Reynolds 531 tubing make this almost certainly a Flyer of some sort or possibly an early 60s Franco Suisse. Those frames can be so similar it may be tough to tell without more decals. I’ve got a 1960 Franco Suisse and the “Carlton” down tube script is much larger than the subject frame, based on that I’ll say it’s a Flyer. It would be interesting to hear from Kohl57 on this one.

After zooming in on the top tube it looks to me like theres a faded decal that might say Carlton Flyer just above the cable stop near the head tube lug.

I can only see it when zooming in on the second photo you posted (the one showing the headbadge) but I’m pretty sure it says Carlton Flyer.

The paint was also pretty dinged up, because I'm pretty sure those were transparent lacquer over chrome. But you can see the identical frame details.
I just painted it kinda green and called it good.

That's a Carlton Flyer from 1967-70. I remember those from.my first LA Wheelmen rides many years ago. Harding's, Hans Ohrt, and a couple other shops in the region sold them. Ever see a Carlton International? More like an Ephgrave or Condor than their namesake Raleigh. Cool rig, Gugie!

...if your guy is gonna get it repainted, you can still buy all (or most) of the decals you need from H Lloyd. They even have a slide decal version of the Carlton Flyer one.

...just as well. that flamboyant copper color is tough to recreate. He can order up two of those waterslide Carlton Flyer script decals for the top tube and they go right on over the ghost image from the old ones. They're pretty fragile, so it's not a bad idea to spot clear coat them .
