Depends on the dictionary.

The six out of ten I just looked at define cyclist as either a bicycle and or motorcycle rider. And that’s that. period. end of discussion. Finito. Don’t you just love it when someone thinks they know it all and tries to get the last word and tries to shut down the debate? I don’t. Too much of a power play. Not advisable with loved ones or casual acquaintances unless you want to look like a gentleman part. With my response above I now look like several gentleman parts.

P.S. I am a bicyclist to be specific and a cyclist to be very non-specific according to the word informally embraced here.

[QUOTE=CargoDane;21801411]It is not "diluted" to use "cyclist" to mean anyone on a bicycle/tricycle and whatnot. It's an umbrella-term. Just like "pedestrian" and "motorist". Hell, even "motorcyclist" is an umbrella term. Your level of "dedication" bears no bearing on this, as that it is merely a subset of "cyclists". You say that there is such a thing as "bike riders". Yes, there is indeed. "bike" is short for "bicycle" = "bicycle rider" = cyclists. You can also "ride" on a motorcycle, as a passenger in a plane, or on an inflatable banana behind a speedboat.

Just like "the human race" is an umbrella term, "Americans" being a subset of that while still being an umbrella term that can be futher divided into many, many subsets: rich, poor, politicans/non-politicians, factory workers, office workers, city dwellers, rural people, fat people/underweight people, you name it. It doesn't matter which subset you fit or how many subsets you fit, you're still American, and you're still of the human race.

There is no "dilution" there. It means someone "cycling" - i.e. they're on a unicycle, bicycle, tricycle, or how many wheels you care to add. It's all cycling. They are all cyclists.

Btw, what was that "Danish experiment" you referred to in earlier post?[/QUOTE

CD I should have written Swedish Experiment. I am old a feeble and want out of the human race. So why the strong feelings about a totally inconsequential term in the scope of our lives? I could see an argument about COVID, human slavery, climate change, etc. FYI Half of what I write is tongue in cheek or for my amusement.

Come to think of it, "hand pedal" doesn't seem etymologically correct - should it be "manal"?

If you google "cyclist" you get the simple short statement--------------one who rides a bicycle. No requirements are listed.

Well, let's call them "propelled by human power", just like normal bikes. I still say I use "my feet" to propel myself, even though one of them is a prosthetic.

No problem
The reason we are discussing the other thing is that some people want to somehow disassociate themselves from the umbrella term because they feel they're somehow "better". The only way to do that is to attempt to somehow make the umbrella term nonsense and meaningless.

Who is this "we" that you are speaking for?

Or are you using the Royal We? (that would be even more weird)

Rest assured. After all the inflammatory posts you made in multiple threads, I highly doubt you will ever have to be concerned about being included in “we”.

Cool.

Who decides who is part of your "we" club? (not that I'm interested in joining a club full of fragile folks)

After riding my bike for about a week, and having 14 miles on it, I started saying, "now that I'm a cyclist..." Obviously in jest

I have biked to work for 28 years for fitness, and like the narrator, people will assume I'm a member of some arbitrary cycling group they concocted in their mind that is anti-car and uber-liberal politically. I, too have had people complain to me about the poor behavior of other cyclists as if we all know each other and are members of a secret organization with a specific agenda.

Unlike the video's creator the phenomenon of being stereotyped is nothing new to me since I am jewish ("Why do you all...?") and my wife and family are black ("Why don't y'all...?").

But I encounter plenty of other people who are impressed by what they perceive as self-discipline (it's really just habit and some tricks to keep me riding daily), and what they perceive as "toughness" in the snow and cold (It's just experience and good planning).

Overall, I enjoyed the video...thanks for sharing!
I bailed on the video after a couple of minutes. It's well produced and engaging enough but I needed him to get to his first point sooner.
But, the comments here including the one above were well worth reading. You guys are brilliant!

The self described cyclist boy racer type cyclist, remind me of the skier that set around the fire in the ski lodge, and tells of their last exploits on the slopes. And they remind me of the fisherman that tells how big the fish was they caught last week.
