Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Pcad would confirm. RIP :
I did it twice yesterday, 17% both times. It was a king of the hill thing. Lots of climbing.
Yeah, I miss the old bugger too.

Only if the angle is correct for your riding position. I had a pair at one time.. I had to chose between the correct position on top or the correct position in the drops. Otherwise the top was even smaller than normal.

I'm grinding on that. 17% I was out of the saddle in the small ring. I could feel the resistance slipping, it was hard.

Both times I did the Radio Tower climb, I was able to push 250W at 60 rpm in 34x27, but to stand on the pedals I had to drop down to about 34x21, at which point I was pushing about 315W at 54 rpm, and that was pretty much the same all the way to the top. I did get some "relief" now I think about it, when it "levelled off" to only 11%.

And, yeah, when I was standing I was getting just a hint of *shwip, shwip" on each stroke. Not enough to qualify as real slippage. More like squirmage.

I built up another rim brake wheelset last night

At that price I was honestly expecting them to be tubulars! Every time I see a dirt cheap set I'm so tempted...

I did Stage 4 of TdZ last night. "Casse-Pattes" in France. This stage was "Scenic Routes", but I didn't pay much attention to the scenery. Just the riders around me, the gradient, and my wattage!

It was interesting watching the group break up into at least 3 distinct groups, within the first 2 miles. I ended up in a group of about a dozen riders, 3rd on the road. It was hard staying with the group, like the time I rode with PenVelo's 'racers' group instead of the 'recreational/century riders' group. I found I'd be bouncing back and forth between pushing 190w and then two quick hard pushes up to 350. This is why Erg Mode is so difficult for me, I think. In Resistance Mode, I can do whatever average power is required by pushing, then backing off, then pushing then backing off, but Erg Mode chases you when you back off.

Anyway, twice I was in a group of maybe 10 riders and they suddenly disappeared - Poof! Gone! - and I was by myself. The first time they reappeared within about 5 seconds, but the second time I think it took longer and they dropped me. Or I dropped them, which seems a lot less likely. Zwift weirdness. And when we got to the Petit KOM, I got dropped. I'd spent too much energy keeping up with the group. Thank god the last 2miles are all downhill!

Weekend weather looks cold, plus windy too. Unsure if I will HTFU and ride or play a video game on Zwift. Ordinarily I am gung-ho to ride, but weatherman says Saturday morning temps around 25F and winds 15+MPH. Maybe, maybe not.

I think a big part of it is just being a larger surface. The Canyon's bars are round through the tops, but they stay 31.8mm rather than tapering right outside the stem clamp area, and they're darn comfy. I tried a Salsa bar on the Ritchey for a while, but it was really skinny and uncomfortable on the tops. The Soma Highway 1 bar also doesn't taper, but it's 26.0. Still nice, but not as comfy as the Canyon's.

The Bianchi came with an ITM flat top, 'carbon look' bar - a bit of carbon fiber over the aluminum - which was nice, and I replaced it with a Zipp 'Ergo' bar that not only is flat, but also angled back a bit. Also comfy.

I tried them and I didn't like them at all, even when I sacrificed the drop position. I prefer large diameter round bars.

I was noodling around on YouTube last night and came across an Officina Battaglin video, showing a buildup of a Portofino. OMG!!! What a beautiful bike! It had the Cromovelato finish, where they polish, then chrome plate the frame, then paint the tubes - but not the lugs - with transparent colored lacquer. Hokey Smoke, Bullwinkle!!!

Now I know what to buy when I win the lottery.

I just looked it up, the NY Cycling Club rates Harlem Hill at just 4.4%, (seems low) so I stand corrected. Methinks Zwift takes creative liberties.

Back when I used to ride the park regularly I would bomb down the hill preceding it hoping to build up enough momentum to survive the near 90 degree curve that preceded Harlem Hill. It was particularly exhilarating because the loop has always been a MUP with oblivious runners, walkers, skaters, etc all over the place, so you took your life and the life of others in your hands by bombing down that hill.

I stopped doing it once I saw a guy crash trying to avoid hitting someone at the bottom of the hill. It was not pretty.

Wait - you mean New York is NOT covered in transparent bridges and flyways with legbreaking gradients?

That's what we had yesterday and supposed to have tomorrow. Today, however is upper 40s with west winds at 12-14. Had a great ride with friends and my wife.
