SOLD: Immaculate 1984 Trek 770 / 58-60cm
This is Trek's top-of-the-line 1984 770 with full Campagnolo Super Record group. The bike has been ridden very little and is in incredible condition. Brake lever hoods and tires have been replaced. Toe straps, Benotto tape, and all cables are original. Tubulars have not been glued. Actual center-to-center measurements are seat tube 59cm, top tube 58cm. Next to impossible to find one like this. Here's your chance!
Bike will come with the Wolber Aspin/Campagnolo Record wheelset and not the Araya/Suzue/red tires in some of the photos.

That's interesting to see the portacatena drilled dropouts as late as 1984, eh @T-Mar and @Drillium Dude.
I couldn't easily find a catalog page at high resolution, but I'd assume they are shown there, too.

Maybe John's double-negative sentence structure is causing confusion? The progression as I see it goes like this, paraphrased:
Q. Isn't '84 late for portacatena? Think it's in the catalog?
A1: Here's an '84 catalog photo that shows the portacatena drilling.
A2: From JT: Every one of those dropouts I brazed at Trek had portacatena drilling. ("I don't recall any without the portacatena drilling." = none without = they _all_ had portacatena drilling)
= Dropout is correct, despite date seeming late. Trek had shootloads of them.
Unless I'm missing something very obvious....

I’m fairly certain that John was saying that this is an amazing bike and would be a wonderful addition to anyone’s collection. At least that’s how I read it.

Nope you’re right. I just went back and read his post and saw that he wrote “without” and not “with”. So it was me who was confused. But now I’m also wondering what elaboration LBCwanabe was looking for, or did he make the same mistake as me when reading that post?

I googled that for you, mostly to fill the sizable void in my knowledge about Portacatena, and JT posted here some years back that Trek ordered 1010B dropouts from Campy, and Portacatena-drilled is what Campy supplied. Trek didn't specify the drilling, they just ordered 1010Bs and drilled is what they got. JT or others would have to fill in the rest.
My guess would be that nobody in '83-'84 needing to braze a heckuva lotta frames would look at those dropouts and stop to wonder why they weren't getting undrilled ones. I'd also be surprised if there was any pushback from end users.
Was Campy sitting on a ton and shipping them to anybody who didn't object? Would anybody object? Shipping to everybody because they had tons? I guess somebody, somewhere, knows that answer.
BTW, anybody know when Portacatena-drilled 1010B production officially ended? I'm seeing it started '76-'77, and seeing "ended not long after," but nothing solid with an end date.
The frame I build at a Proteus framebuilding class in '81 has a Portacatena 1010B. Smaller builder, obviously. Just a data point.
In the thread I'm referencing here, I think somebody said they got an '83 Italian-made Bianchi with a Portacatena 1010B. 'Nother data point.
