Hi all,

I'd like to switch all my water bottles to use either a dust cap or some kind of cover/protection against mud, road grime/grit, etc. I've searched the web for bottles with dust caps and I'm only finding lots of cheap chinese bottles of dubious material and undeclared components (BPA free? Not?).

I also looked at generic bottle covers or protective caps, similar to latex seat covers, so that I could use my existing bottles. All I found was the type of neoprene water bottle case that acts as a cooler, with an open top (the top is precisely the part I'd like to protect).

Then I thought of what else (apart from a plastic bag) I could use to adapt as a water bottle protective cover. Some ideas I considered were:

- A large size balloon.

- A large size profilactic.

- A small size latex glove.

- A small pouch.


Does anyone know of a good, recommendable water bottlle that is clean, BPA free, does not have a plastic taste, and comes with a dust cap?

Alternatively, does anyone know if a universal fit water bottle protective cap exists? Or what else could be used to make one?

Nalgene makes at least two different kinds of bottles with covers for the drinking spout. I have two each of the two types. They have held up well for many years. I have dropped them at high speed, more than once, with no damage except a very small amount of road rash. I use them all the time. Mine don't leak.

Yes I have two of the small ones. Probably at least 10 years. When I bought mine they only sold white. The four Nalgene bottles I have are the only ones out of about maybe 30 bottles That don't leak. All the exposed spout typical bottles you see often eventually leak.

I have had them maybe 5 years, can't remember. I like them but the ATB bottles are easier to hang onto, and a little easier to drink from when riding.
I bounced a full one off the road at 20 mph, It has some tiny hard to see scratches. It's OK.

The other ones you linked to, I have not seen.

I had a set of these at one point. The cover was decent and they claim to be BPA free.

Mine's called a Camelbak--mouthpiece never gets dirty. (the backpack, not their water bottle line)

+1 for a Camelbak or another manufacture equivalent. Water bottles haven't really had a place on an MTB since the late 90's.

I should note that I now only use a bottle when I XC race and want to carry the minimum amount of gear.

I am using a solid stainless steel water bottle, which is very easy to clean and its BPA-free cap has a stainless steel bottom from which you don’t get any lingering residue tainting the flavor of your next sip.

I just wipe the mouth off before I drink out of my bottle. HTFU.

I get more bugs, dirt, mud, and random small stuff in my mouth and face while riding, a little more incedentals on the tip of my bottle is no different. Pure mud would not be cool. I've also used one of These and it seems to stays clean. Someone in my house bought it and I borrow it

I gave up on the Camelback concept. When decide I need a backpack on a ride, I ditch the water bag and just toss bottles in there.
