Hi,

Where is everyone getting theirs? I am looking for some quality bottles that I have yet to find. I attempted buying some local here to discover upon receipt that they dont fit well into my Nitto cages and rattle to kingdom come. I sound like a keg truck as I ride.

Anyone have some recommendations? I have found some for sale in Canada but am not sure about the quality. Anyone used the In-nate brand?

Stainless steel bottles make strange gurgling noises when you drink from them (or at least mine does). And they sometimes clink against the bottle cage in a most annoying way.

It's probably bad for me, but I still us plastic bottles.

There's nothing wrong with most plastic bottles. The hard Nalgene bottles got a recent undeserved (IMHO) bad rap for alledgedly leaching bisphenol A which actually is consumed in the reaction to make polycarbonate. There are planty of other things to worry about.

You can try sewing leather onto your bottle cages to stop the vibrations.

i find things wrong with plastic ones, but truth be told, they're cheap, don't break, and work for a good long time. I guess i just haven't warmed up to drinking out of metal yet, my sigg bottle ended up as a nozzle for a rocket a friend was building O:-) just never used it.

I use Klean Kanteen water bottles, and you can get the non-rattley bottle holders from the Klean Kanteen site as well. I have three, and I like them a lot.

They also sell a lot of different lids, so I have one of my bottles with a tight sealing top especially for alcohol (for my Trangia stove).

I use Kleen Kanteen bottles as well and don't use special bottle cages - they seem to work fine in most of the various cages I own.

I'll add a vote for Kleen Kanteens. The cheesy logo is easy to buff off in a few minutes, if it matters to you. The sports lids work great, and water tastes good even after a hot day. The rattle issue: I prefer the King Iris cage. It's a piece of functional sculpture. To keep the cage and bottle from rattling, I wrapped the lower two-thirds of my bottles with hemp twine, then shellacked the string with a couple of coats. It's grippy, quiet and probably better insulated. I think it looks cool, too.

+1 on the Kleen Kanteen. I use it on the bike and off. A wash with a scotchbrite pad will take off the logo and keeps it looking new.

You could wrap your bottles in busted inner tube strips to stop the clinking. I like the "taste" of stainless steel over plastic, and they seem to keep water colder.

Thanks guys. I found a supplier over here who does the Klean Kanteens. But, they are 50 percent more expensive than in the US. DOH!. So I will have to mail order them.

As for cages I like the Nitto ones myself. Not cheap though.

I've been using the two same 1L Smartwater bottles for the last 2 years. I like the look of stainless steel,
but clear plastic works just as well.

Not cheap!?! People are still buying whole bikes for less than that at Wal-Mart. I'm sure they're nice, but, sheesh, there are so many accessories I'd want to get first for that much.

Kleen Kanteen bottles are the way to go. No horrible plastic taste. You can clean the bottles in the dishwasher.

Very durable. I had one for three years till it fell out of my cage and got ran over by a car. The rattling drove me nuts and I finally purchased the plastic cage from Kleen Kantreen. Not the most beautiful cage but it is secure and makes no noise unless...

The problem I have now is that the cage mounts lower on my seat tube and when I hit a big bump I hear a little ding against my ti frame which I am worried about damaging. So I am still looking for a better system.

Like the picture of the leather strap. Very cool.

Count me in the Klean Kanteen club too.
I got them because I was getting sick of that horrible plasticy taste of my previous bottles. They're especially loud and clangy when carrying 2 together, but very quiet once sitting in the K.K. cages. I also bought 2 of the larger 40 oz ones to store extra water for longer rides. It's best to be careful when drinking from them on a rough road 'cause of the hard plastic nipple (sorry) could bang against your teeth.
Since you can't squeeze them like a regular bottle, you have to suck on them like a baby bottle...

I wonder if you could mess with a flat top lid to pop a straw or mouthpiece from a nalgene bottle. Otherwise that looks like a lot of work to drink from a bottle

A neighbor uses a kleen kanteen that rattles in his bottle cage, he just stuffs the bottle into a wool sock and then puts that whole thing into the cage.

i use 1 SS bottle when i tour
only in that, often i use it for hot green tea
its durable enough to place directly on hot coals
but you need something to grab it with, being that its hot.

the thing that is DANGEROUS about SS bottles, is that if you happen to drop it while riding, and especially if its full of water, that thing is super strong, and heavy. suddenly its a significant road hazard, if you happen to run it over, or worse yet, if anyone is riding near by.

while i like SS, and using it as a canteen, etc...
they are potentially dangerous
often on club rides, where we ride in close proximity, if someone happens to have one, I'm quick to point out the hazard.

another thing i do not like is the hard plastic bite valve. a large SS bottle and that hard plastic bite valve, feels as if its about to knock out your front teeth, if you happen to be on rough pave, etc...
or if you simply happen to get it close to your teeth.

plastic bottles, at least if you had to run one over, that your riding partner had dropped, there is a very good chance, that you can simply run it over, and the lid would pop open, and the bottle compress.

those SS cylinders are scary.

Aesthetically, stainless steel bottles are appealing, but for practical purposes, I will continue to use plastic ones for now.

Re: risks of ingesting carcinogenic materials from plastic bottles that have been baking in the sun... I am not a chemist, but my perspective is that the fumes from automobiles and trucks that we share the road with are also injurious, yet we continue to tour. My understanding is that only certain kinds of plastic are thought to be potentially dangerous, and that these plastics are no longer used.
