bike comparison question

I hope these fit into this section of the forums.

looking at a raleigh technium 480 and a centurion elite rs.

both look to be in good shap from the pictures and i was wondering which one would offer more in terms of build quality, ride ect
i know the raleigh is aluminum with cromo triangle and the centurion is full steel. thats about it.

thanks!

Bikes: 1949 'Italian' , 1950 San Giusto, 1897 Union, and a number of "projects"... 198? Grandis, a couple of Mixte's...

First off, Welcome !

Fit is everything. I personally don't know a lot about either one of these models, but certainly, if you are interested, go see them, go ride them, and see if they are your size. I see your location is Vegas ? Me too. I don't know your skills and mechanical ability, but if I can help, let me know. Do you know your frame size ? Do you have any pref on what group is used ? I saw the Centurion had Shimano 600. Not sure on the Raleigh.

I would take steel over aluminum myself. C&V is slim pickings around here..... Also, I have frames and parts if either of those don't work for you. PM me if you like.

Joe

The Centurion is a higher level bike, component-wise and frameset-wise.
It really comes down to what you want to ride. I've had both. For me, it's the Centurion, no question about it.

The Technium has an aluminum main triangle, and generally friction components. Mine had Suntour, which was smooth. There are several levels of the Technium, I believe, and there was even a Technium Pro, or maybe a Team Pro, something like that, in red and black. I would love to have been able to ride one of those, but mine was a 440.

The Elite RS was just below the Ironman in '86, or below the Prestige and the Ironman in '85, or somewhere else, in earlier years.

The models I'm familiar with had Tange 2 frames, 2.2 oz heavier than the Ironman, mainly due to slightly relaxed geometry (more tubing) and the differences in the tubing itself. The years I know about had Shimano 600 2x6 indexed, and were great do-it-all, affordable bikes, with better components than the Lemans RS that replaced them in the later 80's.

As others have said, fit is everything, and renders some bikes virtually worthless.
