She blew more than three times the legal limit.

Evidently mowing down a ped/cyclist when you're hammered gets you only 12 months jail time.
I like to think my life is worth more, but society doesn't seem to think so.

I know of a kid doing 8 years in Georgia for vehicular manslaughter after falling asleep at the wheel, no DUI involved.

I think if someone is stupid enough to drink and drive, there should be no "involuntary" in their sentence. Unless they involuntarily drank and then were strapped into a moving car.

Not cycling but...Last year, a good friend's godbrother was hit and killed while walking on the shoulder of a road in CO by a drunk driver. The driver had a previous "alcohol related offense" and, while he was at first prescribed 4 years prison, ended up with just 6 years probation.
I've never asked of the details but gathered the victim was responsibly walking the couple miles home after a night out with friends.

As to the 25 years for weed. The guy had amounts that put him well above the drug dealer amount. Probably a repeat offender and had a weapon as well.
Both this woman and the drug dealer deserve 25 years. Sad only one got true justice.

Wow...involuntary manslaughter and misdemeanor? A couple weeks ago a drunk hit and killed a teen in SF. The driver was over the BAC limit and allegedly speeding. He is being accused of a felony DUI and manslaughter.

I would like to weigh in on the opposite side here.
It would seem to me that the woman's punishment will be carried out by herself for the rest of her life.
Every time she sees a cyclist she will remember that night.
The smell of the blood. The scream of the cyclist. The horror.
I would have her do a speaking tour.

Realize that you are talking about a media report, which is poor substitute for the truth. Sensationalizing is their bread and butter. We can't know why the prosecuter went for a plea; maybe the kid was riding without lights, black clothing, had a few beers before leaving work, had been in accidents before, who knows. We sure don't. But, making judgment calls base on a media report, that's loco.

The thing is, even if the guy was hard to see, if she hadn't been drunk than the result may have been different. The problem is that it's the "criminal justice system" instead of the "victim justice system". The law is forced to err on the side of innocence unless the evidence is beyond a reasonable doubt.
