Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Group ride. Chilly- low to high 40s mostly.
Another one of those mixed groups that calls for defensive riding & it's sometimes better to be off the front.
There was a overlapped-wheel spill, but no real damage done.
Starting to see glimmers of returning fitness.
No pics- hard to take with insulated gloves.

62mi, 6k ft, 6h on Saturday. 55 and partially sunny when I headed out, around 50 along the coast and high ridges. Up north over the bridge to Mill Valley, headed up Edgewood to Panoramic (four corners), headed up Mt Tam to the gate, then down the other side to hwy 1 on the coast. A bit chilly. North along hwy 1 into a moderate headwind, chilly but sunny. Whitecaps on the lagoon; 190W at 12mph into the wind. Up Bolinas-Fairfax road to Ridgecrest, very cold at the top in the deep woods. A bit of debris - pine needles mostly - on the road, but not too bad. (Those can be slick as snot when thick.) Up along Ridgecrest over the six sisters to the Mt Tam peak turnoff. Was getting a little too late or I would have headed up to the peak. Down to Panoramic, continue all the way to hwy 1, then down to Mill Valley, the bike path and rolled back home through Sausalito and over the bridge. Cold descent but it warmed up significantly about halfway down. It was getting dark and rapidly colder, although the wind died down a bit. A few rain drops here and there. I forgot how nice Bolinas-Fairfax is coming uphill from hwy 1 to the ridge since I hadn't climbed it in a quite a while, definitely one of the nicest rides around here. All in all a beautiful winter day out!

Been doing easier flat rides lately because of the job I'm currently doing but it does help me recover for the next week. About 45km city along the torrens river the coast and back. Warm weather light breeze.

Just went out trying to get a KOM on a hill segment this week. Was fun for me, but wasn't a proper ride. I know I know...segment hunting is HORRIBLE! Got 2nd overall though, so that convinced me that there is hope yet! So now I won't rest until I get that crown. I was always a sprinter (running) growing up and now that I've found some sprint segments for the bike...it's hard to stay away. That's where my strength lies, so I mainly ride the trainer inside right now to work on endurance and climbing, then go out segment hunting. Spring should yield much longer actual outdoor rides.

Saturday: 26 miles including Strava hunting, trying to crack the top ten on some tough segments where I've been bumped from 2nd to 8th to off the top ten since 2017. Went okay at first, snagged a new PR on a 4 mile time trial roller coaster incline segment. Then all the pollen and allergens blown in by a north wind caught up with me. Asthma attack slowed me down suddenly so I cut the ride short and meandered home. Still didn't crack the top ten again, but there will be other rides. Not bad overall though.

Sunday: Solo recovery ride because the local roadie club "recovery" rides are closer to my tempo pace. I can keep up with them, but the next day I'll need a recovery from their recovery ride. That's the price of trying to hang out with younger guys and gals who are much stronger. Did a pleasant 30 miles on the more comfy steel road bike, including touring the Christmas light displays.

Unintentional selfie in phone reflection. Totally lost the Wahoo log on that iPhone, but got the basic data on the Android phone in my pocket. Time to dump that old 2012 iPhone 4s era Wahoo ANT+/sensor pack, too many glitches.

Turnaround point of a favorite 5 mile loop. Always a challenging ride no matter which way the wind blows, or doesn't blow at all.

Elaborate holiday light displays in a rural enclave a few miles west of me.

Cold FULL Moon celebratory ride last week. Began 5:15pm Wednesday for Rise @ 5:17pm) with FULL @ 12:12am Thursday and Set @ 7:15am. Took some inbetween breaks and rode a bit longer so got in 160.15 miles.

Yesterday was a "recovery of sorts" ride. Started at 3:30am on my Propel Advanced SL but the legs just didn't have it. Rode a VERY SLOW 36 miles feeling poorly. Chilled at home then decided to take grocery grabber for food shopping. Did that, put away food and headed back out. At mile 85 I stopped at local whole food store for some seeds, almond butter and Organic California Red wine. Got back home with 100.2 miles in..

Love the classic Selle Italia Flite. Still my favorite saddle.

Saturday:

Sweet Spot intervals during a group ride with the crew I used to ride with. Basically just needed to get time in specific zones, so I'd hop on the front and drag the group around for a bit, then pull off and chat until I was bored enough to do another interval. 51 miles, 39 degrees on wet roads, the wind shifted around on us so it was a headwind for most of the ride.

Sunday:

Endurance ride with my best good friend chatting it up about bikes, wives, and the upcoming racing season. 34 miles, 37 degrees on dry roads, slightly windy.

12/15 - Sunday. All the snow melted from torrential rains the day before. Sunday forecast was nice except for gale force winds. 45 miles on mixed surface
