Motor Noise

After 3 years and about 3500 miles my 500W geared hub motor is getting louder. It is barely noticeable at steady speeds but gets pretty loud when under heavy load on steep hills. I assume this is gear noise and that it has the typical plastic planetary gear set. I am thinking that while the bike is idle this winter I will pull it apart to check the gear wear, and clean & repack the gears.

Have any of you run into this increased noise, and how have you cured it? Does repacking the gears help? It is a generic motor, not a major brand, so I doubt that I could find a replacement gear set.
