"The Knave" Chronicals; '06 underway
What a crazy 24 hours of cycling I have had outside.
Friday my backup bike flats in front and I have no spare tube in the backup bike's saddle bag. My bad. My wife has to come and get me so I can get to work.
Then today, with 50 degrees and wind of 20+ I head out with that same bike (My regular road bike, my Campy Veloce Klein Reve X is being outfitted with a new CF handlebar upgrade) only to have the same front tire flat again on the backup bike (Trek 7500FX), this time five miles in. Obviously we missed something when replacing the first flat. So I figure why waste the new spare tube, since it too would probably pop anyway from whatever is causing this.
So I limped the bike home the five miles, going only 5 mph once again...thumping along with my flat.
When I got home I grabbed my third-string bike out of the garage and took off.
There she is....the "Old Warrior" I call her. A Trek Navigator 400. I could hardly lift my leg over that bike when I bought it, just four months after my hip replacement surgery. That's the one I crashed for my first crash...the one that broke a wrist and knocked a front tooth out. So this old warrior is always going to have a place in my heart. It felt funny riding so upright and with all those shocks on there!
The funny Knave story part of my day goes like this:
I saw him coming at me and decided I would wave. I did. He nodded and said hi back to me. I was shocked. Then I had a theory....since I was riding this old bike he didn't recognize me. He thought I was one of his flat-bar brothers or something. That had to be it.
But alas, no.
Five miles later I see him coming at me, only this time it is the REAL KNAVE. Remember I have told you that he has a double out there. These guys have to be brothers. Same size. Same look. Same bikes, right down to the old canvas bag on the back rack! This time the real Knave never even looked up, as per his usual grumpy self. So his twin must actually be nice, unlike him.
Then it started to rain on me.
Then the world's longest, slowest train made me wait for 15 minutes right toward the end of the ride.
But the ground had that great smell of spring when the rain hit it.
Through all the crap with the flat tire again and having to ride my old bike in the rain...it was still great to be outside. Saw my first robin of spring. Saw seven deer together playing in the park.
And Sunday...I finally pick up my Klein, complete with the new Winwood CF bar and new computer.
I need a real ride on my real bike!

Do we have to endure this for another year???
Geez, I thought it was over with when you finally dropped him.

Over?
Nothing is over until I say it's over.
Was it over when the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor?
Hell no.
And it ain't over now!
Of course, if the majority of readers don't want to hear about any Knave stories this season I'd be glad to stop them, but that hasn't been the feedback I've gotten thus far.

It's snowing out, so I've been re-reading the Knave Chronicles, and after reading about when The Knave Got Dropped, I happened across this little story.
Maybe The Knave really does have a brother. Coincidence???
Yeah, probably.

I think Hipcycler needs to drop the knave on his old warrior mtb. Nothing like an even playing field to make a story more exciting. A drag race between a Corvette and a yugo just ain't gonna be as interesting.

Thanks for posting the link: This little story....
I MISSED that when it was originally posted.
Freakin' hilarious stuff the guy wrote.
THIS is why the legend of The Knave will continue here this season.
It's my BF legacy now!

Dear Hip:
I look forward to many more installments of the "knave chronicles".
It is kind of funny when you think that we are sometimes defined more
by our enemies than our friends.
By my calculations, that would make you a knight!
Keep rolling,
a.c.
