Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Kinetic or CycleOps ?

Hi all, I am in the market for a fluid trainer. I am looking at Kinectic Road fluid trainer for $299 at REI and CycleOPs tempo Fluid Trainer for $239.00 at Performance bike. I understand both are good products. but, is there a big difference in terms of performance and noise level between the two?

Check out the magnetic linking system on the KK Road Machine. It will never leak.

I bought mine from this place. Great dealer -fast shipping and $275 with shipping and a free Spinervals DVD. I seriously doubt I will ever buy another trainer.

I replaced my Blackburn mag trainer with a CycleOps Fluid. There's no comparison, the CycleOps is much better. Smooth, very quiet, and the resistance is nicely progressive.

Love the cycleOps fluid. no problems so far about 600 miles on it though, not enough to start seeing problems.

Got the Fluid2 and so does my wife. Mine leaked and is currently in transit, there or back to here, to be replaced. The customer service was fantastic when I called, basically gave me an RA# and said they would take care of it. Leaking resistance units is the one problem I have heard about the Fluid2's. If at some point I need to buy another I may look into the Kurt unit since it seems a bit more reliable, when it comes to the resistance unit.

+1

While I have a CycleOps mag, I plan to upgrade to fluid next winter. Hijack: How do those with a Fluid trainer compare the resistance levels of that over the magnetic? I know the fluid is progressivly more resistant proportional to cadence, but as compared to the levels of the mag, is one more...something?

btw: sound is not even an issue...fluid=most quite. I believe it is worth the extra cash...

kurt road machine gets my vote. I road the fluid 2 at my lbs and liked it. Then I got online and read the reviews on the fluid2 and the kurt and i took a chance and ordered the kurt from www.1upusa.com because I had the option of returning it for a full refund. I have to say after trying the fluid2 for awhile at my lbs I like the Kurt alot more. It just road smoother, seemed quiter and feels more stout. Plus i never read one review online about the kurt ever leaking.

If I were buying a trainer right now, it would be the Kurt Kinetic Rock and Roll. I tried it out and it's awesome.

Thank you all. I am leaning toward the KKinetic road machine since no one had any bad experience with it.

The Cycleops used to be made by the guy who started Kinetic. My theory is that he took the knowledge of what used to be the best trainer, the Fluid 2, and made it better. Just my opinion though. I have the KK Road Machine and absolutely love it.

+1 for the Kinetic. No possible leak and heavier construction.

I used a Cyclops Fluid2 for 22 months then it began to leak. I replaced it with a Kurt Kinectics Road Machine. It is fabulous because of the realistic feel because of the 6lbs flywheel.

I ended going with the KK just because I was more comfortable with the mag drive of the fluid resistance unit with the KK as opposed to the shaft drive of the Cycleops which can and has had leaking issues. They are both great trainers though.

Perfect timing! I got my new resistance unit today, via FedEx. Not bad, only took 2 weeks, considering I'm in Canada and I shipped it directly to Saris...I'm happy...

Let's see how long this unit lasts...

I went with the KK and really like it. Got it from https://www.bicycledoctorusa.com/ for about $250 shipped which included the spinervals DVD.

Recently upgraded from an old blackburn magnetic trainer to the Kurt Kinetic. Wow the KK is very massive and it's a shocker at 5:30 am to try and move it out of the garage. Love the Spinerval's "Time saver 1" free DVD. I haven't worked out hard enough to get nauseated in quite a while. The KK seems very smooth and is pretty quiet, seems very well built.

Kurt Kinetic's end up being kind of expensive because it is easy to get hooked on Spinervals DVD's. I have collected 8 of them so far. They are very effective and make the time on the trainer go by much faster.

so, my KKinetic Road machine arrived yesterday. It is a solid and quality product. I love it. do you recommend using trainer tires when you ride on the trainer?

Why are you buying trainers at this time of the season? Do you live in the Southern Hemisphere?

I don't have a specific trainer tire..I just use an old tire I don't care about anymore. I replaced my older Michelin Pro Race tires last year and now those Michelins are boud to trainer duty until they come apart. Seem to be holding up rather well.
