Odd Story of the Day

I was shocked to see this, maybe it's a really old story:

The "Innocence" is that he thinks it is no big thing. Like driving 1-2 mph over the speed LIMIT, or a cyclist rolling a stop sign is no reason to penalize them. It is nothing that rises to a DQ as everyone else was doing it. It is how the sport is played.

What was different is the riders own country went after him. A country quite inexperienced in how international cycling is done, red the rules and decided to apply them - except his own comments, not under oath (the Opera thing), not the official enforcement is what caught him. It was embarrassing to the UCI that this could go on (I think it still does), so they made an example. I believe Miguel thinks it is just a much ado about nothing.

I always thought Armstrong's "persecution" (which I define here as being held to a different set of rules than anyone else he raced against) was part politics, part anti-Americanism, and partly due to Lance making too many enemies. Because what happened to him really was a bit like giving someone a ticket for going 57 in a 55.

1.) Yes, it's technically a violation, and
2.) Yes, everyone does it, and
3.) No, that is not a defense, and
4.) It would be obvious to anyone who was ticketed in such a situation that they were singled out for some reason OTHER THAN, going too fast, and,
5.) That person would full well that there is not a freakin' thing they can do except pay the penalty, or face something much worse.

I see it clear as day. I also see how dominant Armstrong was in the Tours he won. The guy simply outworked, out-trained, and outfoxed his competitors, and demolished them. Ruthlessly and consistently. And yes, drugs were involved, but were merely incidental to everything else he did to win, and not the primary thing that allowed him to succeed.

His phenomenal work ethic was the main thing that set him apart. If Ulrich had trained anywhere near as hard, he definitely could have beaten Armstrong. But he didn't, so he lost, and that's my point.

It was America(n) that did this. Travis Taggart. Still there.

Would Spain have gone after Indurain, Belgium after Merckx, France...never mind.

USAC is quite the unfair organization in several areas, particularly to juniors. They are at a loss for who they are. I've been posting this some 10 years now, we can see how racing is working out for them.

I agree to all of them (the points).

I think we had a PED free tour when Cadel Evens won. It was sooo boring. Sastre too - maybe.

Froome - legal PED user, but a user that others didn't get to do (or they also had a TUE). Wiggans same - and everyone else for the last 25 years.

Personal story noone cares about, but may help explain my view. My daughter refereed her first soccer game and a coach called her out for not penalizing his team for a foul she missed. He insisted the other team get the call. As a senior ref, I explained to him, that was none of his business, and he was rather clueless on the Laws of the Game.

USADA needs someone to explain to them what their business is. Lance deal was a UCI / ADO deal they missed. Ref missed the call, carry on. Euro sports are like that. If I see Travis, I will explain that to him, and I may see Travis as he works across the street from a fav breakfast place. He should have been fired. That he was not not, is also telling.

Article is dated October 2012. Oprah confession was January 2013.
I don't see anything Indurain has said on the matter recently.

^generally, me neither.

still waiting for the football names to drop from operation puerto from a decade ago. funny how only cycling names came out. you think cycling got turned upside down...
football woulda been a dumpster fire. not holding my breath as there are too many $$$ and too many powerful/connected people to let that story get out.

Is football the NFL or the FIFA thing? Both could apply.
