Happy New Year Charity Ride -- Sat, January 12, 2008
HAPPY NEW YEAR CHARITY RIDE
or "Intro to the Santa Monica Mountains"
Saturday, January 12
Date: Saturday, January 12
Start location: In front of the Malibu Courthouse.
Meet time: 7:30am* Coffee, Krispy Kremes and bagels provided.
Roll time: 8:15am
Weather forecast: 70°F high
Distance: 50 miles
Elevation Gain: 5300 feet
Difficulty Level: Intermediate
Route: Click for Bikely route here. Routeslips will be handed out prior to the ride.
*Be there early! There is at least one other big ride starting off at that location, so you may need a few minutes to look for parking. There is plenty of parking available in the surrounding area, as it's a Saturday and these are government buildings. There is also a shopping center on the other side of PCH.
Ride Description:
Moderate grade climbs starting with Latigo, descending Rock Store (don't cross the line!) and following Mulholland to Old Topanga, and back down to PCH. This is a SOCIAL ride.... not a hammerfest. However, you must have good enough bike handling skills to handle twisty descents. Please be extra careful on Rock Store - there have been reports lately of gravel and rocks.
SAG:
YES! I will be providing roving SAG throughout the ride and coffee/bagels at the start. Look for the silver Volvo wagon. I will be carrying emergency food supplies (Hammer gel, bananas, electrolytes, plenty of water), pump, tools, 700c tubes and bags. If the weather changes dramatically one way or the other you can take out or put away extra clothing in a bag with your name on it. Please note: SAG rides will be for mechanicals and emergencies only. NO FREE RIDES! You must be comfortable being self-sufficient on rides of this length and elevation.
Regroups:
There will be three regroup spots: Latigo Canyon Road-first summit, the Sierra Creek Market and the park off Dry Canyon Cold Creek, prior to Old Topanga. Water will be provided at all regroup spots. There are bathrooms at nearby coffee shop/gas station at the start, at the Market (Regroup #2) and possibly the park (#3) - we're still looking into that one.
Post-Ride Eats:
There will be a number of eateries a short walk from the cars after the ride. Be sure to have a way to lock up your bikes if you plan to do so.
FREE $20 GIFT CERTIFICATES!
BF'er Luwin1026 has sent us a stack of gift certificates good for $20.00 at McCormick & Schmick's Seafood Restaurant. First 60 riders at the start gets one. (Unfortunately, we can't use them all for the post-ride eats, as there is a limit of one coupon per table. And no, we're not going to ask for 60 tables!) It's also worth an addiitonal $5 if you sign up for their mailing list.
Charity Donations:
All proceeds will go to Rover Rescue and the Los Angeles Co. Bicycle Coalition.
If you have a preference of one organization over the other, you can make out a check to either one. Cash donations will be split 40-60 between the two groups, as voted by BFers. Donations will be accepted at any point before, during or after the ride.
If you cannot ride but would like to donate to the cause, you can mail me a check or Paypal me directly. PM me for details.
After monies are collected they will be presented as a gift from "Bike Forums – Southern California."
Hopefully, we can make this an annual event and continue to help out those less fortunate!
Disclaimer: Ride at your own risk. Cycling carries a significant risk of personal injury or death. DO NOT participate in this ride unless are knowledgeable about the risks involved, and are willing to assume personal responsibility for all risks associated with these activities. I'm interested, as I haven't been riding up that way yet. I'll keep an eye on this to see what date is determined and if that will work for me!

Do we have to be social or can we sit in the back and brood?
I'll plan on being there - out of town week 3 of January, so as long as it's before that, I'm in.

Regarding the charity, might I suggest a pool for which excuse Go Fast uses for bailing?
- Re-wiring home stereo.
- Tires corroded due to lack of use.
- "Work."
- Met hot roller-blader in Venice. (Hit it.)

ME would love nothing more that doing two at once...but in this instance, she'll be hitting the SM mountains. Sorry, Dan, but your lungs and raising valuable funds for them are far more important than my driving 7 hours in rush hour to ride a two lane highway in sub 50 degree weather. It will be an enormous sacrifice, but for you...I'll do it. I'll do it.

So, Joy, you going to be riding by then?
I'm interested, but can't do the 12th. We have Wicked matinee tickets for that day.
I'm sorry, but as much as I'd love to hurt in the mountains with you guys...
You kids go and have fun!
