Your Weekend Ride Reports -- October 24-27

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Our first real sorta-cold snap of the season, which is always a challenge. My asthma is pretty well controlled with an albuterol inhaler and other common methods, but it always takes me awhile to adapt to the cold, same as the annual Texas summer heat adaptation -- although cold adaptation is usually quicker.

Two Sundays ago we were in our thinnest short sleeve jerseys and having popsicles after the ride. Today we were the popsicles!

We had our first morning in the 30s (F) a couple of weeks ago, and I had to bail out on a group ride -- couldn't breathe well enough to keep up with the moderate 15 mph pace. So I've been riding more at night or early morning whenever the temp is below 60 to gradually get adapted. Seemed to help on today's Sunday morning ride in the 40s. No problems with the usual 17-18 mph pace, although my head felt like a snot dispenser. Had to huff my inhaler a few times and got so hoarse I couldn't carry on a conversation, but it was still an enjoyable ride with a smaller than usual group of hardy souls.

Rainy, cold and very windy Friday so I did a short intense interval session on the trainer.

Saturday evening -- 24 solo miles, mostly checking out a new cheap but effective windbreaker. I wasn't expecting much for $24 but it's remarkably good. Breathes better and wicks moisture much better than my pricier Pearl Izumi windbreaker, which tends to trap moisture and feel clammy.

Sunday morning -- 33 miles, weekly "recovery ride". It might be a recovery ride for the younger, stronger folks (men and women alike), but for me it's a spirited ride that often pushes my limits. In previous years I usually fell far behind and bailed out, but this year I'm able to keep up. Felt good. Chilly but sunny morning and warmed up into the 50s after about an hour.

Yesterday's ride was a repeat of last Sunday's ride even the weather was the same. Basically dialing in the bike, it's has component and ride position changes. I'm luvin it, might take it up in the hills next.

High wind warnings here but hey, I went for a ride up the local mountain anyway, 30 miles 3.517 ft of gain on Saturday.

Sunday I played Pathlete and actually went out for a 30 mile ride with actual stiff headwinds and real world elements while others stayed home and rode their trainers. At times the headwind was so stiff, I was working pretty hard to do 12.8 mph. How do you lower cycling traffic? Turn up the wind!

Good headwind!

Saturday had to work, blah! Sunday did my S. Tampa Picnic Is. to Davis Is. ride for 40 miles. It was fairly windy, but did okay. Still hot and muggy.

Crazy winds Sunday so I decided to try a MUP and see how far it went. Turned out to be 20 miles. Going out was mostly into the nasty wind but it runs through a lot of trees so not so bad. Did a little riding around where the trail ended so only 42 miles total.

Naturally found a goathead on the way back so had to stop and change the tube.

Bean fields.
Weather was great Saturday. Went for a 38 mile ride. Found out a loop road was 6 miles.

Nice day Sunday here in Ventura County, California. In between wind events , only a slight head wind home for the last 12 miles. I did 30 miles for my 65 year birthday ride. Cool in the morning and a mild 74 degrees on the way home to Santa Paula. These winds are very dry , so lots of water and pray for no smoke!
