Anybody ever use a USB sound card?

My son's laptop has chronic (since it was new, don't get me started) problems with the sound dying. It will come back after somewhere between 1 and 100 reboots.

I recently discovered that, just like there are usb wifi dongles, there are cheap little sound 'card's that live on USB dongles, you can get them for as low as like $5.

Anybody ever use them? Do they work well? I'm not looking for an audiophile DAC here, just reliability vs a problematic laptop oem component

I’ve had sound card issues for a couple years on my Dell laptop. The $5 USB sound card works great.

Yes! I had an old computer sound card go kaput and bought a philips usb sound card which worked great. I even used it on the next computer because the sound quality was better than the onboard card. The type I had was the size of a hard drive though, containing all the inputs and outputs you'd need. That's the only thing I could see being problematic with a USB dongle; maybe the computer's stock 3.5mm "jacks" won't work.

If you are only after a cheapie, you would appear to have little to lose by buying it.

I ended up with an Asus Xonar U7 MKII USB Sound Card and am very happy with the sound improvement.

An even better option I think would be something like this USB speaker.

From a couple of the reviews "It apparently has its own sound board because its only computer connection is through a USB port." and "it solved my problem of my sound card crapping out on my thinkpad t420. My Ubuntu 18.04 installation immediately recognized it, good choice if you have a laptop where the sound card stopped working"

I ordered the USB speaker. Haven't heard yet whether he's gotten/had to try it out
