Salsa Warbird Carbon

Yes, I've seen the promotional videos. Yes, I allegedly saw one at Dirty Kanza this year. But I've got to ask: Has the Salsa Warbird Carbon made it to the showroom for retail sales yet? Does anyone own one? Does anyone have an official date when they're supposed to be for sale?

(A check of stock at QBP showed -0- in stock and no projected date for availability of the frameset I was looking for.)

No, Colossal is a road bike. Room for just 30mm in tire width. For serious gravel, you need at least 40mm in capacity.

Warbird is the gravel bike in the Salsa line.

Where did you get that idea?
From Salsa's website
COLOSSAL
ALL-DAY PAVEMENT / PAVED BIKEPACKING / RACKLESS RANDONNEURING
WARBIRD
GRAVEL RACING / FIREROAD RIDING / ROAD RIDING
Seems like Salsa thinks Warbird is for gravel.

From the Salsa Blog:

"The Colossal is our Adventure by Bike™ motto lived out through paved and mixed surface road riding. It’s the bike that inspires confidence to achieve that long ride you’ve always wanted to take on, to connect a huge series of roads together to make a really cool loop, or to do a multi-day road bikepacking adventure that truly allows you to escape. For model year 2015 we’ve made some great updates that make the Colossal an even more capable all-roads machine."

As you can see, its NOT a pavement but an all-roads bike, which is the classic definition of a gravel road/adventure bike.

700x30 tires would leave you walking on most of the gravel roads around here. I would not want to ride a bike with such small tires down more than a few miles of gravel. Try riding a 30mm ride tire through a patch of loose 25-30 mm diameter rocks - it won't be fun, and a 30c tire does not have enough volume to air down low enough to make for a comfortable ride on rough or loose gravel.

I have to walk my 700x40c-tired gravel bike sometimes. The Collossal would be a decent bike for general riding on mostly paved roads, but I definitely do NOT consider that a gravel bike due to the very limited tire clearance. It also has very short chainstays, which would not be ideal for loaded touring at speed - based on the geometry and components, I would consider it a road bike that fits slightly fatter tires than most.

Yes, it appears the bikes are hitting the showrooms now. But Salsa won't sell them to my nearest Salsa dealer unless they agree to radically increase the number of Salsa bikes they stock. I would have to drive a minimum of 3 hours to my nearest Warbird carbon authorized dealer. I contacted Salsa, and they won't make any accommodation to make the sale. They don't care. So, as they say, I'm "going another direction."

dude....what in the world?

from the Salsa Colossal 'homepage':

COLOSSAL
ALL-DAY PAVEMENT / PAVED BIKEPACKING / RACKLESS RANDONNEURING

Colossal is our all-day road-riding and rack-less randonneuring bike."

now, from the Salsa Warbird website:

"WARBIRD
GRAVEL RACING / FIREROAD RIDING / ROAD RIDING

Warbird is our gravel race bike"

notice how Salsa used the terms "pavement" and "paved" and "road-riding" with the Colossal, then referred to Warbird, point blank as their "gravel race bike"?

c'mon man.

Ok...so here it is September 5th. Has anyone seen a carbon warbird?? My black frame has been on order for months. Delivery date from Salsa has been pushed and pushed and delayed and it all sounds like so much BS from them. The LATEST story is that the frames will ship "mid September." Who believes it?
