Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Got my stitches out today, and have been doing some trainer rides, though I can't put my hands on the bars still.

On the bright side, new fork, saddle, derailleur, etc. are all supposed to be here this week, and, hopefully, my custom team logo state champ jersey

Not Billy-quality, but an osprey circling over Lake Koocanusa. There were eight of them above.

This bike consists only of a set of requirements at this time, which are:
  • Geometry: What we used to call "road racing," with relatively low BB and long enough wheelbase and enough fork trail to be ridden no-hands and to descend confidently on bad pavement.
  • Construction: Suitable for a light rider.
  • Equipment: Good wheels, rim brakes.

I see no problem with any of this, but the options are quite wide and varied, from a budget bikes-direct type bike to a custom dream machine from Calfee etc.

What's the budget?

I saw no problems, other than my own internal conflicts and fears about being slow on a fast bike.

Maybe about 5k as a starting number. I doubt there would be much benefit for me in a custom bike.

Other than the retrogrouches, you didn't expect this group of enablers to oppose the vicarious purchase of new bike, did you?

Rim brakes, though? Guh.

I was first introduced to carbon bars in 2009 and have been addicted since. The flat tops are great and the shock mitigation is sweet.

I now have carbon bars on all of my bikes.

Don't be afraid. I've been riding fast bikes for years with no ill effects.

Tons of options out there from almost every manufacturer of road bikes. My advice is see if you can go on some test rides and then decide. You may even decide to just ride what you have.

Not really. Yes, no superfluous complexity on this thing. Might go for electritional derailleurs, though.

Oh, I think it’ll happen and I look forward to doing it with your advice. I’m just not in a hurry and just spent most of this year’s raise on the boat.

Better hurry, then. Road bikes are increasingly going towards disc, specially with aero bikes, it seems. For rim, it seems like "climber" bikes are the last stand.

One last bit in favor of discs and then I'll leave it alone - you already have a disc bike and getting another would give you more versatility in terms of gear swapping. I also find that discs are great for me in terms of enabling bling wheelset purchases - I never could justify the cost of crabon wheels when the rims would be getting worn away every time I hit the brakes.

Yeah, good points. In the event that rim brakes have disappeared by the time I pull the trigger, so be it and it's reassuring to consider those advantages.

By the guy that was the driving force behind NeilPryde. Enough coloUr in some choices to satisfy the retro-ists (yeah right), though carbon fibery enough to qualify as a bike worth riding.

Oooh, I hadn't heard of those. First glance at the small pics I thought they were doing a 1988 Rockhopper scheme, but upon viewing big pic I see they used gold, not yellow. And fore/aft colours are swapped.

Kudos.

Our version of pay for performance is perform more and get paid less. Rinse. Repeat. Sad!

This is very depressing to hear and so many people seem to be in that kind of situation.

What kind of outfit do you work for?
