Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

wow. Who cares how others ride their bikes or how they outfit then. Just be happy that they are out riding their bikes and not lazy. If I want to buy a high end bike and throw streamers on it, that's on me.

I ordered one of those cylindrical bags last week because I'm tired of my keys & phone weighing my jersey down in the back.

All sorts of cool bags and gear with places to stick everything you might possibly want to take with you to do anything over in this forum too! Might be cool for you to check it out if you love bags on bikes. https://www.bikeforums.net/commuting/

...then I suppose you wouldn't want to go to the commuting forum? *shrug*

Also pretty sure you wouldn't want to come to a forum at all really. That's kind of the whole point after all.

I know how you feel because people keep thinking this forum is about racing somehow.

Well that's silly! There already is a Racing forum. That one is pretty boring though as it's all about actual racing, rules, preparation, tactics, etc. The real racing stuff that people don't actually like.
There's all sorts of other forums though that are pretty cool - Utility Cycling, Touring, Commuting, Cross/gravel, 50+, Long Distance, and even one entitled Recreational Cycling.

Personally I have always liked this one because...well I'm a Roadie. I like riding on the road. Like a roadie. I like Roadie culture, clothing, accessories, parts, etc.

I sometimes enjoy big huge bags to carry everything in as well. Usually I am commuting, going on a gravel adventure, or utility cycling like shopping for groceries or running errands. Sometimes it's handy too when I am doing super long distance or recreational riding. At those times the temps can change a lot through the day so I can bring like 2 or 3 changes of clothes and a decent sized picnic lunch. Fun times.

So the whole purpose of a forum is to be judgmental? Because that's what I meant, as I think you know.

Folks unhinged by such sights definitely need to stay away from randonneurs. Not Randonneur as a style, but people actually riding 300k, 400k, 600k, 1200k or longer rides.

You will surely see stereotypical rando bike, vintage or modern. The owner's style may well be just as stereotypical and flawlessly executed. But you'll also see a carbon race bike sporting 23mm tires and barely rando-legal clip ons, fenderless, and a tennis racket clamped on the carbon seat tube to hold up a bag made from a surplus military bread bag. Up front below the clip ons you might find an under seat bag repurposed for that space. Either of those randos might be a 89:30 1200k finisher, or a 49 hour finisher. You can't tell. Shut up and ride, the truth will reveal itself.

Edit: at PBP , the truth comes when you're still on the way to Best, maybe a half day or full day away, and here come the guys on the way back. You see what they're riding, what they're wearing, and realize what matters and what doesn't.

You can definitely carry a 12" sub in a jersey pocket, but a baguette is better.

Not sure if you saw this in the original post:
"what's up with all these people running aero bikes and 50mm+ deep carbon rims running this cylindrical "

So I don't think he's asking about riders who are touring, or doing extended length rides.

BTW... i went for a ride today and headed out with a short sleeve base shirt under my jersey. After 10 miles I was too warm and took the base off, rolled it up and put it in a jersey pocket after I moved the banana that was in that pocket to the one where my phone was. I then continued my ride and complete 58 miles by the time I got home.

I guess it is possible to go out early with temps in the low 50s and have temps in the mid 70s by the time you get home. Once I did want to shed my leg warmers so I hid them in some shrubs and picked them up on the way home. On the local MUP I often see clothing and water bottles left on the side to be retrieved later. Most people respect it.

And a big part of roadie culture is snarking on those who dont fit into roadie culture.

That said, the original post actually was a valid point. I get carrying a bar bag if you are touring - but that wont be on an aero bike with deep sections. I also get carrying a bar bag if you are commuting to work and only have 1 bike - but why wear a skinsuit in such a case? It definitely is a very puzzling combination.

If I had seen that, I'd have been tempted to post about it here too. That doesnt mean that it bothered me or was keeping me up at night or I had a problem with it. The purpose of a forum is to shoot the breeze about all sorts of stuff, and unusual things that happen when riding is one of them.

Now try 45F in the morning and 85F in the afternoon. 🙂

I agree mid 50s is t shirt weather.

Panniers and a commute.

If you're going on a casual road ride for that long then Recreational Riding(?)

Gravel adventure? Grab a 6 of a decent IPA to take along. Fill your 6 water bottle mounts and check their clearance to your fenders. I'll meet you out there.

If you're racing that long ->soigneur or team car

If you're doing spirited road enthusiast riding - let's be honest you would be going faster for a shorter period of time and would have been in the coffee shop and home for a nap long before it started getting close to 80.

I miss PCad.

It's honestly some of my favorite part of Roadie Culture. Sarcasm, intelligence, wit.

Without it we just have a mass of unwashed throngs wearing club fit jerseys, debating the types of cookies and brownies at the rest stops, a bunch of hi-viz vests, and handlebar bags.

The OP may be exaggerating on the "skin suit" part, but if true that seems far more egregious to me than the handlebar bag. Do people really wear skin suits outside of racing?

This is the same as showing up for a day of skiing with your buddies at the local hill looking like this:
