Also Nevada City. Did the P12 and while it cooled down after Caloso’s race it was still hot. I prepped well by sitting in the sun cheering on other races most of the day.

Race started on an incline into the hill with a $100 hot lap. Miss a clip in and you’re hosed. Same applies if a rider in front of you misses theirs. I got through it pretty clean, but near the back. Field blew apart quickly and I was on the blown up side of it. I was shot out after a few laps with some others.

This was my first Nevada City Race experience and it was a blast. Expectations were less than zero and I achieved that.

Mikes cleaned up, Riekert lapped the field solo in short order and just looked strong/smooth. His team smothered everything else.

Another B crit. Breakaway of about 8 or so laps the field with 3 or 4 laps to go. Guys in the break yelling at everyone to stay out of the race, stay in the back. So which is it, can the field still race or not? Can the field launch an attack designed to help a teammate? Its not fun to be racing and having guys yelling at each other about this topic.

When you lap the field, everyone who got lapped is essentially racing for scraps - especially with eight lappers.

So yes if I were them I'd yell at guys to get out of the way, since their race is essentially over. I've been there, it's annoying to have guys who have already lost trying to beat you.

But that doesn't mean I'm right.. and in some cases you actually don't want to lap the field just for this reason.

I want to do that race some day.. next year!

Sounds super hard, but one of those Norcal races you just have to do at least once.

How would you rate it compared to Cat's Hill?

I'm not going to get excited about 10th place on a weeknight crit. On the other hand, I feel justified in giving my teammate in the break a leadout. And don't feel like being yelled and screamed at for doing so.

If this is still causing confusion then try bring up the issue with your race official/organizer. Maybe ask if they can make a statement at the beginning of the next race about the rules in the case of lapping Then just follow the rules they lay out, and ignore other people's yelling in contradiction to those rules.

I’ve never done Cat’s Hill. Need to get down there next year. From what others told me, Nevada City is a tougher course. Obviously that depends on how the field tackles the race.

The heat wasn’t terrible in the P12. There is neutral water at the top of the climb and a local is there hitting people with a cold water shower as well.

Another option would be to stop getting lapped so much. Just saying.

Man, I hate this. Totally hate it. I've been sprayed right in the face multiple times. And at a race in Iowa they were using these water cannon things to shoot ice water at you from a foot away. Got shot right in the crotch. It hurt.

I get they think they might be helping, but that wasn't a help at all.

This guy was well behaved. Only hit you with it if you wanted and the water was like a shower instead of a canon. I took advantage a few times. Not me Alex's pic below, but you can see the setup.

In my opinion, it's the best part of the race.

Tough when you are an old man cat 3, one year removed from your first ever race, and you are going against Cat 1s and former national champions and recent winner of the Dirty Kanzaa, etc. But yeah, I would like to be lapped less often in the future.

Could be worse, you could be an old man cat 4, going against cats 4's and still losing.

Did a hard race last night, up in Lakeport (west of middle o' nowhere, CA).

Four-corner course with a little bump on the backside. A big-ring climb, only maybe 20 seconds long, but that combined with the heat (and a course change) really F'd with the legs.

8 PM start, 75 minute race. It was 95 degrees at the start, so even though the sun was setting we still started with ice socks and all that lol. As a side-note the drive up confirmed my bias against SF - it was 90 in San Jose, then 65 and foggy af in SF, then 30 mins north of SF back to 90 and sunny. Wtf is up with that city.

I got 4th at this race last year, but a course change (shortened, so the hill came sooner each lap) meant less time for recovery.. and we did a "parade lap" that was supposed to be neutral and ended up not being neutral at all (pace car went too fast), so I ended up on the back. Struggled just to stay in contact, tried to move up but the legs were ****.

Too much training? Not enough? These are the questions going through my head at the time.

It took about 45 minutes for the legs to come around, and by that time we'd dropped about half of the 50-person field. The guy who lapped the field twice last year was heavily marked, couldn't get away. Our strong-man luckily got in to a move towards the end of the race with ~8 other dudes and got 2nd, so that was cool.

Overall it was a good race, but a late night.. the 3.5 hour drive meant I didn't get home until 1:30 AM..

Off to another race in an hour or so! Luckily this one is only about an hour away.

Did the same race as @mattm matt, but the 35+ 123 version in hotter heat. I'm totally a master's racer now, blew out my back taking the bike off the roof rack. Thought someone punched me in the lower back as a joke, but sadly no one was around.

Tried to race anyway and felt like I could tough it out. Caught behind a nasty crash on lap two (medical escort to a hospital outta town) and thought I could cruise back up to the group. Struggled to connect and jumping out of the saddle aggravated back pain. Dropped ... solo'ed for a bit.

Spent today on the couch with some ice and world cup.

First time racer

I’ve signed up for my local Wednesday night training Crit series this summer. 4 of 10 races in so far. These are my first experiences in racing. These are cat5 men and 4&5 women with 20-30 riders.

Race 1 - group of 5 guys decided to push it from the start. Pack started to split after about 2 laps. I held on until there were only 7 left with 8 of 12 laps done, then I couldn’t stay with the acceleration that turned out to be the eventual winner’s attack. Got lapped by the winner with 50 yards to go. 7th overall

Race 2 - same winner as race 1 off the front solo after about 3 laps never to be seen again. Stayed with the front group this time. Came into the last turn second wheel. Couldn’t manage to pass the guy in front and got passed by one guy in the sprint. 4th overall

Race 3 - basically a repeat of race 2. My cornering is much better this race, but I still can’t sprint for anything. 4th overall

I decide I really like this and buy a new race bike. CAAD 12 Ultegra. I love it

Race 4 - the winner of the last 3 upgraded, so its wide open. I’m feeling more comfortable racing so I decide to make an early attack. I manage to break from the group and me and 1 other get a small gap for about 1.5 laps. They bring us back and I filter to about 9th wheel and plan to just sit in and recover for a few to recover. Then the lady right in front of me lays it down in a corner and I pile into the back of her and go over the handlebars. Small amount of road rash. The new bike survives with only a small scratch on 1 shift lever. Finish the race, but the adrenaline dump after the crash means the legs refuse to accelerate for the last 2 laps and I’m off the back.

Ophir RR. Did this one last year and did okay. This year, not so much. Popped hard on the second climb due to overheating. Was weird, my body just pulled the plug before my legs went. My heart rate felt high (no data..) but it basically just gave up. Oh well, do better next time.

Watsonville crit yesterday, decent field for that race of 20 in the p/1/2.

We had 6 or 7, so the pressure was on us to beat the local hotshot pr cx dude. We attacked a lot in the first 30 mins, I was otf solo for a lap or two. Eventually our sprinter made it away with two others, excluding pro bro. It was really the idea situation. Pro bro tried to bridge a few times but couldn't get separated from the pack.

Our sprinter won, it was good! The race is near the Cal-Giant berries hq, so we overdosed on strawberries afterwards. Good times.

Without seeing the prior 5-10 seconds it's hard for me to figure out what might have caused the crash.
