This will be the last post on my Centurion. I road the bike 101.79 km, I done a lot of work on the bike , but didn't put any parts on it so my total spending was the 5.00 I paid for it. My wife wouldn't let me add some yellow paint to her Buick to match the bike so I put the bike on Market Place and sold it for 10.00 so I ended up with 5.00 profit.

Got to do a short yes snow ride with the Schwinn GSX. final test did great so it;s a real keeper. While only a bit of hope on this bike found in a dumbster in pieces figured it would be parts bin and scrap metal. Yet this one continues surprising me at just how good it rides and brakes and performs with really only $11 DR hanger out of my pocket cost Sorry No Snow ride pics well have some soon.

Arnold Deluxe

Added 25 km today on this one, bringing me up to 72.88 km total since August 11.

The water flow over this low head dam was mesmerizing.

1982 Bridgestone Regulus

The rebuild is done, of a fashion. To the $60 original purchase (see post #61 ) I have added (all used and all from the local bike co-op):
$6 BBB Butterfly handlebars (including bar tape)
$5 Shimano vintage brake levers, pair
$2 Suntour 14-32 freewheel
$3 Suntour ratcheting friction shifters, pair
$10 27" x 1 1/4" tires, pair
$2 "sealed" bottom bracket
plus my largest expenditure $11 in rust converter to address what turned out to only be surface rust around the BB lugs
TOTAL: $99 Canadian

After some work with a spoke wrench, I stopped trying to improve the hopeless rear wheel, which has many seized spokes and more than a little “hop” (that I will notice in the 100km of riding – if a 27” wheel is 2145cm circumference that means that I will “notice” the hop “only” 46,620 times...good thing it has a saddle that might have been original from 1982). It may be hopeless, but it is certainly not hopless!

After a 7.5km shakeout ride up to the local University and down the hill to the inlet from the Salish Sea, the ride is smooth (if the rear wheel is not). It has taken the place of my Steve Bauer as my regular bike to get groceries. I am not yet sold on butterfly or trekking bars, as another old bike craphound said to me “it has a 100 different places to put your hands but none of them are comfortable.”

After the clunker challenge riding is complete I look forward to adding the rack and towing hook from my Steve Bauer, so this will also be my bicycle towing machine for when I go craphounding. Bridgestones are pretty uncommon in Vancouver, so I was wanting to get my hands on one, and this one was originally sold in 1982 in Palo Alto, where my mother was born in 1928 (see what happened with the numbers there, fun, eh?). Oh, and I am going to throw that rear wheel into the molten core of an active volcano!

With 92.5kms to ride that is only 43,124 hops to go...

I love the old headbadge with the compass, before it was conformed to the corporate logo of the tire company

straight gauge cr-mo tubing (love the decorative flourish on the top of the seat stay)

Rusty bottom bracket lugs and decal from Palo Alto bike shop

Little known fact, the real reason we closed OUR southern border - Mount Baker is a volcano! Lots of people are saying we are going to build a wall to keep the lava out. You can just imagine who is going to pay for it...

I am afraid that neither Baker nor Mount St. Helen's would be sufficient to deliver what this rear wheel deserves. However, I am not sure I am the hardass to ride this thing to Mount Doom!

But no time to chat, I have to get hopping if I am going to ride those 92.5 kms!

I traded the $45 Voyageur for this 434 a couple days ago. 16km down, 84 to go. I haven’t worked since March so no job to ride to, but I’m still joyriding and running errands and shopping etc. Having a 25 mile round trip commute made it very easy to achieve the miles on the last couple challenges. I think I can still do 100k even with a late start. I’ve also gotten very lucky with my clunkers ... and they seem to be lighter every year.

Took a ride in the first Snow of the season on the Schwinn Mesa GSX putting me well over the 100km mark. The bike road good in the snow and mud actually a lot better than I expected. I will be keeping this bike and riding it some this winter. So I guess I will consider this one another Clunker Challenge in the books in the end I spent about $20 for $11 DR hanger, $5 for a couple of new cables I already had and $5 for can of PB blaster on this dumbster find build, everything else used was salvage parts I had in my bins.

I rode 71km today to bring the total to 78.5km, only 11.5km to go (that's only 5,361 more hops to go, but who's counting?).
Here are some pix of what I saw (and my beautiful clunker, of course):

I'm re-entering after going over budget with a Jim Merz Allez (which worked out fine with the Allez moving into #2 road bike position by bumping another fine bike to CL). I grabbed a 1990 Stumpjumper for $40. It is not as cool as the other entrants pictured above but I always wanted one. The plan is to put no more than soap solvent and lube into this and hit the trails. So far, I saved the chain with some dual pliers action on the 9 or 10 frozen links. I hope to lube the cables without disconnecting them--the rear shifter cable is mess. How does that happen? I've been lucky with Rapidfire shifters but this front one might give me trouble. The tires look ok and maybe the tubes are still good.

Complete.

I think it will clean up nicely.

Deore DX all over.

It takes a bit of effort to frazzle a cable like that.

Fingers crossed they hold air or are patchable.

I think the Covid used bike boom is about over. Flippers were snapping things up immediately for a while. This Stumpy was there for almost a day😊

My wife works at the Salvation Army Thrift store, when she came home from work Friday she told me they got a bike in, she couldn't remember much about it. She was pretty sure it was a ladies bike because she was pretty sure it didn't have a top bar. The only thing she knew for sure was it had a big seat and a bag hanging under the seat, they couldn't get the zipper open on the bag but it had something in it. She was not the one that priced it but thought it was 10 or 12 dollars because it was pretty rusty. So Saturday morning I was there when they opened to see what it was, turned out to be a Schwinn World Tourist, I thing it is a 1989 but not sure, the 4 digit date code ends in 9. The bike is in better condition than I expected , with just rust spots on the chrome and was vary dusty. It has a front free wheel I had never heard of a front free wheel, its kind of odd seeing the chain rings and chain going around even when costing. I found out some of the World Tourist were made by Giant but I don't know if this one was, the serial number starts with SA and the bike was made in China. By the looks of the tires the bike has had vary little use. All it needed was air in the tires, I don't even need to change the seat hight. The price was 11.00, I got the bag open and it had a rain jacket in it, I was hopping it would have some tools and an extra tube. Before going home I road 7 miles, then went home and spent some time cleaning it, it cleaned up good. Today I put another 13.3 miles on it.

I couldn't save that shift cable. The derailleur adjuster had snapped off and I thought it interfered with indexing so I stole one off an old XT. The tires hold air and I got 22 miles of flat MUP today.

Luv me some extractor action.

100km on the Arnold Deluxe

15.6 mile grocery run.

Yesterday's provision run puts me at 106 ½ kms since August 11. I quite enjoy the posture this cruiser puts me in. With one bike "completing" the challenge, and rehabilitated, I'm going to focus on getting the 100 km on the Supercourse.

I know! A little voice in the back of my head was saying "How can your bike look like a piece of **** if it's shining? For the love of god put the rag down! You're not supposed to polish a turd!" Then I remembered this:

To be completely fair, there are loads of BSO junk made much more recently that falls within the sub $100, locally, but a C&V bike? Just 60's and 70's Schwinn's, Free Spirit's and Columbia's, along with local favorites Concord. The rest are 80's to 90's rigid MTBs, and 20" BMX bikes and Huffy's of all periods. Although, you made me look again, and there might be a nice ride out there being overlooked for the bigger brands, but I can't tell the size from the pictures.

Edit to add: Don't we all want to experience and share remarkable finds like randyjawa?

Given the apparent years of neglect I was pleasantly surprised when the seatpost came right out. The stem practically jumped out of the steerer tube and even the fixed cup came off without a fight!
Toe clip straps are rotted beyond redemption but the 27x1 tires are still good.

Some serious scrubbing with Simple Green diluted with 4 parts water cleaned up everything except the brake lever hoods. Those required some heavier artillery.

Next was a twenty-four hour oxalic acid bath.

A bit of rubbing and polishing, new grease in all the bearings, and the Miyata is beginning to look downright presentable.

Cleaning the petrified grunge from the brake levers required a heat gun and a putty knife as suggested by @nlerner, followed by a bit of lacquer thinner.

Total cost so far $0.00. But now the spending begins. Actually I think I'll get away with buying just hoods and bar tape. The cables were in good shape and the filthy cable housing cleaned up nicely.

Brent

It's almost too nice to use on this bike. In fact, if it would fit anything else I have I probably wouldn't. I was sorry to see Classtime's project failed. I hope the tires will be of use anyway.
That SR seatpost looks just like the one I paid foward to zammykoo in Clunker Challenge #3 !

I think the pictures sometimes hide some of the bad spots on some of the bikes. I know my entry looks much better in the photos than it does in person and I suspect others are in the same boat. And then there are some that look clunky in photos and they are the true clunkers.

Interesting find as rookie at this will give serious bonus status if you can manage to ride 100km on a FFS type 2 drive train. As for dating the bike is 81-82 made in Japan by Panasonic but could be US built would need to sea numbers to be sure.

Something old.

Shimano MTB Brake Cables are HD

Something new.

Delivered 3 days early-on Friday!

Who knew a Turbo was blue under that silly leather cover?

Ready to challenge the tires.

I feel bad about not sprucing up the pedals and cantilevers. The front hub was a little tight but clean and greasy inside so I left well enough alone in the rear--feeling bad about that too but time to ride.

28 miles--much of it dirt today. 10.2 miles to go. It behaves well and fits. I may dirtdrop this bike after the challenge.

Off budget bear bell borrowed from the dogs.

Standard Burma Road snapshot.
