I want a new bike. I've been riding around on an old Specialized Crossroads bike that has served me well, but it's a heavy bike. It's at least second hand, and probably a 90's vintage bike. I want something better suited (and lighter) for daily commuting and weekend rides. I ride 200-300 miles a month (occasionally more). I ride almost exclusively on decent roads (occasionally on crusher fines). I've done a few centuries recently, but prefer somewhat shorter rides on the weekends. I also do a little touring. I'm 60 and not worried about breaking any land speed records. I figure that a hybrid would fit my needs and am considering one of the Trek FX models - specifically the 7.4 or 7.5 (although I'm open to suggestions). I'm interested in your thoughts about these (and other suitable) bikes. Thanks in advance.

The Trek fx series is pretty good and I'm glad that you're looking at 7.4 or better because I think you'd need that level based on your riding. Are you set on Trek? Other manufacturers make good bikes too and it may be worth you while to check them out.

Will you be able to ride both? I got the FX 7.4 and love it. It suits my needs perfectly for mainly street and path riding, with occasional rougher paths. I decided to not spend the extra money for the FX 7.5, as I felt the 7.4 was a little more versatile for me.

I'm not locked into a particular make. The Trek FX came up pretty frequently when I was doing searches, that make is available in town.

I've done a couple of week-long supported tours. I might do a self-contained tour in the future, so the bike needs to accommodate a rack and panniers.
