I saw three blue heron, and three egrets today on my ride. Unfortunately they were too far away to get a good pic.

But that's not the best thing I saw.

The best thing I saw today wasn't a thing, but a person. Well, two people to be exact.

As I was ascending a hill on my way home, only a few blocks from my street, there was a woman sitting with an old man on a short little wall by the sidewalk in front of a house. As soon as I saw the man, I stopped and smiled. It was Bobby, sitting beside his daughter, a former school teacher in my district.

Bobby is very old now, but not so long ago he ran a little store in the neighborhood I grew up in. The name of the store was Wilkes-Barre Poultry, but everybody called it Bobby's. The place was tiny, but he had everything you could imagine - deli (great sandwiches!), dairy, fruit, veg, candy, gadgets, toys, etc. He was a fixture in that place. I loved going in that store and buying those little red fish for a penny a piece. All of the kids from the neighborhood did the same. He always had some kind of playful comment, and would carefully count out your candy on the counter, swipe them into a little bag, and send you on your way. Running over to Bobby's whenever I had a few bucks, or right before my baseball game for some gum, was a highlight of those years. It was always a happy place.

While he didn't remember me, and I didn't expect him to given the number of kids that came and went in that store, I was so glad to see him again. I told him how many great memories his little store gave me, and he smiled. We chatted for a short while, and then I shook their hands, thanking him. Saying thank you to Bobby for his contribution to my youth gave me a feeling of deep happiness.

You might expect a 4-mile rail-trail that passes through three downtowns to be excessively urban, but the quaint town centers on the Joseph B. Clarke Rail Trail are compact and surrounded by woodlands, sanctuaries, and parks. Complete with moving hazards... My max. count (last fall) so far, 17!


Sorry, couldn't figure out how to get still from the video. My first pass, was probably @ 10'. I circled back, passing him again, so this was the 3rd time. The does see me coming and sometimes lope along 5-10 yds in front of me, until they find their prefered gap in the underbrush. It's crazy.

Thought I was kidding? I picked up the frame and walked to within 20 feet of her before she ambled over to the fence and did a graceful standing jump of about 5 feet.

I also didn't care for the one that decided to cross the road in front of me on a 40+mph descent. Missed it by inches.

So we're coming up on "Hippie Christmas" here in Madison. Aug 15, the day 99.9999999% of the residential leases expire/renew, and about 99.9999437% of the renters in town move. The mattresses, craptastic Ikea furniture, and dorm-size fridges are already starting to pile up. And yes, there is the occasional bike or bike part dump to be salvaged.

But this was the scene yesterday afternoon, on my way home from work:

The chair just begs for some contemplative looking skinny dude to sit up there and strike a Lincoln Memorial pose. I stayed across the street, reminding myself that bed bugs don't jump.

Love this thread! I went past the NFL Hall of Fame enshrinement hubbub today. I always enjoy riding through and seeing the visitors and different jerseys. Busted my chain on the way home 😕. Upon closer inspection, it had a lot of cracks forming.
