I made a Staples employee's jaw drop today...
I decided it was time for a new microphone, and I was able to find one I liked. During a bit of chitchat, I told him about my old microphone.
Namely, that it had the brand name "RadioShack". That''s when his jaw dropped (at least I think it did. Hard to tell behind the mask).

Radio Shack... I've heard of that place... so did Staples want your address and offer to give you free batteries too?

Staples already has my email address. Sadly, no free batteries were offered.

From rec.humor.funny... Regarding the old RS policy of always getting your address...
Do these guys at Radio Shack ever get on your nerves, asking you for a bunch of personal data when you're just there to buy something as simple as a couple AA batteries? I think we should inconvenience these people as much as they do us. A while ago I was in Enid buying a printer cable adaptor and the guy asked me for my name.
"Ghosseindhatsghabyfaird-johnson," I replied.
(blank look of confusion)
"How do you spell that?" he asked, obviously not wanting to know.
"With a hyphen," I clarified
"Once more?" he asked
"Ghosseindhatsghabyfaird-johnson"
"Could you please spell that?" he asked, glancing at the half dozen people waiting behind me.
"Oh... just like it sounds," I said nonchalantly.
Putting down "Johnson," he went on and asked about the address.
"Washburn, Wisconsin, 14701 N.E. Wachatanoobee Parkway, Complex 3, Building O, Appt. 1382b," I replied.
Almost through writing all this down, I said, "Or did you mean current address?"
Stoping, he said, (becoming irritated) "Yes. Current address."
"Diluthian Heights, Mississippi, 1372 S. Tinatonabee Avenue, Building 14C, Suite 2, Box 138201," I replied quite slowly.
Waiting until he finished I said, "No, wait, it's NORTH Tinatonabee Avenue." Annoyed, he backed up and changed it.
"I think," I interjected.
"And is all this correct?" he asked in a standard manner.
"Of course not," I replied, leaving, "If you want my REAL name and address, look at the damned credit card receipt."
A little mean, I must admit, but no jury would convict me... at least, none that had been to Radio Shack.
"Ghosseindhatsghabyfaird-johnson," I replied.

No doubt, this, as well as my interest in vacuum tube radios and Ham radio were instrumental in my future career choice.
RS really went downhill when they started featuring more cheap consumer products and changed their focus from parts and hobbyist supplies. I knew they had "jumped the shark" when some sales guy tried to sell me "digital headphones." My ears are pretty much "analog." This guy obviously had no experience in electronics and was just trying to push products and must have read "digital" was the latest hot trend. He probably had no real electronics background, as no doubt some of the early Shack, folks had.
These days Frys tends to serve my needs... as well as Mouser, and Digikey.
BTW regarding the above 150 project kit... my original kit contained no ICs... no digital display.

My very first computer was a Tandy TRS-80 Colour Computer. I was in Radio Shack all the time checking out new software and whatnot. Good childhood memories.

I miss the days when you could go into The Source for computer peripherals. Nowadays, it's mostly cell phones--that you can get at a bazillion kiosks in a mall.

Hondo has a Radio Shack. They were going to close a lot of them I guess this Radio Shack survived.

This was the first computer I used as a child before being gifted a Commodore 64. I remember the huge catalogues as well...

I used TRS-80 as a kid, but it was not mine. My own first computer was a C64 as well. My dad would give me rides to the nearest Radio Shack and I bought things like photo sensors, voice synth chips etc to breadboard and directly interface with the C64 rear port. Being a kid I couldn't find the correct connector and soldered directly to the userport terminals in back of C64 so had lots of wires hanging out the back.
I thought Radio Shack was still around
