CX has its own jar in one of the cages because it has uniquely sized tubes (40mm tires)
FG has its own bag because it requires a wrench (no qr). It was a gift, and included CO2, which I have never used. Mini pump goes in my center jersey pocket.
The other two bikes share a saddle bag. Because they are the bikes I take long rides on, that bag contains a small tube of sunscreen as well as the usual.

autonomy

Patch kit + spare tube + levers + zip ties + surgical gloves go in small seat bag. Pump on frame, but I should really get a smaller one.

This time of year I need the jersey pocket space to stow clothing as the day warms up. I also ride in remote areas, often at distances of 75+ miles. I like to carry food for that and again need the jersey pocket space.

I'll be riding up part-way around this in an hour, but I'm waiting for the sun to come up and the temp to exceed freezing.


...And, why not carry a seat bag? What's the big deal? It can't be about looking pro because pros often use a seat bag on training rides.

What, your wheels can't take a broken spoke or two? I've gotten back with 2 and 3 broken spokes, on the rear wheel. Just had to ride easy, which is pretty much the norm for me on my way back nowadays.

Of course I have a 36H cross 3 lacing; some so-called "modern" wheel & spoke arrangements can't take a single broken spoke. That's one reason I'm staying with this one until I can no longer ride.

Never had a broken spoke. Though I suppose I could consider sacrificing out a lighter weight 17/21-spoke wheelset for a pair of 36, just for that .1% chance of a ride where I might break a spoke. Seems easier to drop a spoke or two down in the seat tube though.. a little bubble wrap taped around them probably would suffice to avoid rattling.

^^ If you break a derailleur side rear spoke, then you also have to contend with getting the freewheel or cassette off. I don't know about the newer ones, but with my Oros it means a big a$$es crescent wrench, plus the removal tool to get it off. You would also need to carry the wrench to get your seat post off.

I could carry my entire tool kit in a rucksack on my back, that would allow me to deal with everything except a broken wheel or bent frame. But it would also detract from the ride enjoyment. So one needs to strike a balance. Flats are the most common problem, broken spokes will not keep me from getting back. Tires are light and foldable, spokes are not (foldable that is they are light).

After seeing all of the posts with "Arundel Dual" in them, I decided to give that a shot-- and it's only been on the bike for one ride, but I get it. Holds everything I need it to hold, and it's very unobtrusive. I was a big fan of the QR on my Lezyne bag... until the QR mechanism developed play in it, and the bag would audibly clickity-click from side to side all day long.

Yeah, I've got a Dual and I like it. I have it cinched up tight and it's like part of the saddle instead of a separate thing flopping around underneath the saddle.
