Holy moly, this is a serious bike tour! Great pics and bike setup. I can't even find a saddle I can ride more than 15km comfortably yet, but that's a different topic we don't need to discuss here.

Looks like a great adventure. If you have time to answer, what kind of places did you stay at? Great photos too.

hey, bro, i've stayed at different types of places, from 'country hotels' for $30/nite to 'resort' type places for almost $100/nite. Tonight i am paying $40 for a big, bright, clean, new room with private bathroom...

Loan me your Birdy GT; I'll put it through the paces in a Grand Tour here. That is what GT stands for, right?

Tell us more about the narrow suspension bridges. With stairs leading to to at least one of the bridges I assume they were not designed for bicycles. Do they parallel car/truck bridges?

Betcha that wasn't Taiwan dollars. Would be nice if they were Hong Kong dollars. Ha ha.

No, those narrow suspension bridges are not meant for any type of wheeled vehicle. Heck, they have a stated maximum number of people who can be on them at one time. They are for access to foot trails.

Taiwan has an impressive system of roadways and bridges. Wide river beds have long bridges spanning them. in several cases you have the old and the new bridge, where the old bridge is more for pedestrian and tourism. Perhaps a good example is the Baling Bride where the old bridge is a touris. destination, and the tunnels leading to it, a bit of a museum.

Taiwan by bicycle: Around the island in 12 days

My own tour is of the East Coast, the island's premier cycling destination. I am in the East Rift Valley, coincidentally in the town mentioned in the beginning of the CNN article above. Tomorrow I'll swing around to the coast and ride the famous Route 11.

Good infrastructure, good food, safe, friendly people, good weather, not overly expensive, quiet country roads perfumed by jasmin, lung busting climbs to 2,400masl if you want, and stunning scenery. What else do you want?

Hiking/trekking is fantastic too. Google 'Taroko Gorge'. Out of this world.

EVA Air flies Bali-Taipei for under $400 return. No surcharges or fees for bikes.

Two crossings today...

Today I crossed the Tropic of Cancer south-bound. Roughly the southern half of Taiwan is tropical.

Expansive paddy views in the island's rice bowl. Reminds me of Bali, actually.

Taiwan and its peaks (highest point 3,952masl) were created by the collision of the Eurasian and Philippine plate. This is where that fault line meets.

Emtrance to the indigenous Amis village of Cimei. The craddle of Austronesian languages (i happen to speak one such language) is Taiwan
