First ride in about 15 years.

I finished rebuilding my bike and did my first ride in about 15 years. Went on a short 5 mi ride to test out the bike. It felt good. I have been running for the last year so my legs and cardio system are in decent shape. I was able to keep an 85 to 95 cadence and average speed of about 15mph. I am looking forward to some longer rides.

The bike is a Columbus steel Recherché from the mid 80's by a small frame builder named Dave Moulton.

The wheels are new and are my first try at wheel building. They are Mavic Open Pro with C record hubs and Conti Grand Prix 4 Season tires. I was happy to not hear any pinging spokes on my ride.

Wont get to ride for the next week however. Going out to CA to see my Son and grand kids.

Bob

^^^, +1 for both, especially the grandkids!!! Wheel building always gives me a lot of satisfaction when I am lacing, truing and the finished product when I ride them.

More pics of the bike would be a plus when you get back form California, oh we need your pie preference choice and be sure to schedule your colonoscopy and get a shingles shot. Is that everything gang?

Welcome and I hope you become a regular here! Isn't wheelbuilding rewarding? The two sets I built two decades - whoops make that three - are still going strong. You've got a bike from a legendary British builder - it's good you held onto it and have rejuvenated it. I hope it rejuvenates you!

Excellent job on the bike and Congrats on doing your own wheels! Welcome back to bikes! They're more fun than running. You can show off your bikes, nobody wants to see pictures of the drive side of running shoes.

I had the colonoscopy a couple of years ago so that is out of the way for a couple more years. Not sure about the shingles shot. I did not get chicken pox until I was 47. That was real fun. I woke up on Thanksgiving with bumps and itching and realized I had finally gotten chicken pox. Not sure how I avoided it all those years but I did. I think I got it from someone with shingles. My preference on pie is what ever kind is in front of me.

It was fun to build a set of wheels. I have another set of hubs waiting. Now I need to decide what rims.

Thank you. I never thought of it that way. The drive side of a bike is a lot more interesting to look at than running shoes.

I'm familiar with the Recherché and all of Dave's bikes although I've never owned any. I've been reading his blog since its early days. That Recherché of yours is a beauty.

Welcome to Bike Forums and the 50+ clubhouse.

Welcome to the forum! Where in Central Illinois are you located? My father-in-law lives in Elizabeth (on RT 20, between Galena and Stockdon) and I have ridden some in that area. I also rode the rail trail from Savanna to Moline, along RT 84. Nice biking in that area.

We say these things lightheartedly in the 50+ but with a grain of truth to them. The colonoscopy is a long running theme here for new people, but we have members that have had colon cancer or in my case my mom has had it twice. It is just a friendly reminder that we care about everyone here. The shingles shot we ask because some members or their family has had the horrible disease in the years after 50. Some still suffer the effects years after the outbreak. If you had the chicken pox, regardless of the age you can now have the shingles virus break out, it is in your body.

Again, welcome to 50+, and ride that beautiful bike all the time, it deserves to be ridden, well.

Bill

+1. Keep riding and you won't regret it. It's much easier than returning to running... I can tell you that. Should be nice and flat in your area, which is good for starting back.

Think it has all been said-Welcome back to cycling and the forum. Pie and pics are important here so keep the camera handy--Or get one if you don't have one.--See 50 + can bring new expense into your life as well as new experiences. Hope you get over the next few as your body adjusts back into cycling and re-find those muscles that have been dormant for too long.
