Since I ride alone, I'm pretty good at carrying on conversations in my head at any effort level.

I can't even carry on a conversation when I'm not riding.

I ride all out when I ride. I don't have enough time to ride during the week to be leisurely or dink around. I may take short breaks to recover here and there, but then I am back on it. The group I ride with does the same. I am not a pro, semi pro, and I don't race. I just like to go out and ride like hell.

I ride with myself so the conversation is in my head no matter how hard I push!

Depends on the ride. When I ride in a group I save my efforts for the latter part of the ride. I like to see what I have left. When riding with my gf I am fairly mellow and I would guess ride at 80%. Then there are rides I call my TTs where I ride "balls to the wall." So, it depends....

I ride like a sissy until I hit the next strava segment. Then I dial it to 400w and take away everyone's KOMs.

I've only pushed twice while cycling; both times to get my riding partner up hills. First time it as my regular partner of my racing days. 80 miles for her. We had already climbed 2000' on legs she raced the night before. I had to get back and go to work. I could drop her and let her ride home alone or I could push her. I chose to push. Two of the hardest climbs I have ever done! We rode in silence and not by choice.

Well, considering the fact that this site is devoted to push bikes, as you are pushing them along while in the act of pedalling, you do push. We all do.
As for the OP's question: I carry a conversation when I'm not pushing hard and I have someone to converse with. When I'm on my own and pushing hard I only talk to myself.

if you're concerned about carrying on a conversation while cycling, you're cycling in the wrong place and/or going too slow.

I wonder what BT defines as a conversation?
His questions are always written as if his internet service provider charges him by each letter he uploads. I mean, look at his 2 letter username.
"How are you?"
"Fine."
Conversation over.

I usually keep it pretty relaxed, but I'll pick it up if I feel like it and push myself. An old coach mine told me that the rule of thumb for the anaerobic threshold is the point where you can talk if you need to, but you don't want to. I generally ride a bit under that.

As hard as I need to. I like a conversational pace for endurance rides and panting for intervals. On group rides I'm either trying to keep up or trying to bust the gonads of the other folks. Depends on who's there.
