On line there are a lot of counterfeit 18650 batteries and batteries that are pretty close to worthless. I know because I have bought some.

There are some good ones too, I did buy some good ones but the seller that I bought them from no longer sells them so I have no suggestions. The good ones I bought were Panasonic, but like I say there are counterfeit ones, so the reputation of the seller may be more important that the branding.

And for those who ride PBP without a dynamo, am I safe to assume they just bring along a ton of a batteries?

The Ixon IQ Premium with a fork crown mount is the best battery powered light for randonneuring IMO. 5 hours on high and 20 hours on low. If you're fast and run the light on low except for descents, 4 AA batteries could last a whole 1,200k. It would be pretty easy to make it on two sets of batteries if you were careful, and if you do run out, you can just buy more batteries. The Pure or Pure B is a good backup to keep in your bag since they are smaller and attach to the same mount. The downside of the Ixon lights is that they do eventually fail so I always carry a backup.

Yep, I did too. A 4 pack of blue ultrafires.
I have a Cadwellum battery, which I believe to be a real 18650. It weighs 45grams. The Ultrafires are only 35, and are shorter in length. I'll keep them around as a last ditch. Time to check IMR batteries.
