I'd like a cross-like tire for my road bike until I figure out which cross bike to buy. Anyone make a decent traction 700x25 for nasty weather?

I'm not sure about a 25, but avocet makes a 28cm. I'm not sure if its going to be enough traction and I'm not sure who carries them. https://www.avocet.com/tirepages/cross_2_specs.html

I have a set of Vittoria Tigre Cross tires, clincher, that are 700x27C. They fit inside a road frame/fork with not much to spare.

I have a set of Vredestein 28 cross tires that are close to 25. Good tread and you can run them up to 120psi.

I setup an old road bike with a triple and 700x28c Continental Contact tires to see of I liked cross riding. No problem with tire clearance and short reach dual pivot brakes. The Contact tires had enough tread that allowed me much better climbing than a road tire but not as good as a studded tire. Great clearance on my roadbike. I was able to see that I enjoyed trail and dirt road riding enough to buy a used cross bike a Torelli steel bike from 1996. I am currently setting up a Daytona Group 9 spd with a 26 tooth T/A Specialities 74 bcd on the campy triple. With the 13-29 cassette it allows for all the gearing I need. Glad I tried out the concept before I went with the expense of a new used frame.
