Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

Tubular prep= add some Stan's?

I was talked to a guy I ride with and he mentioned he puts a little bit of Stan's into the tubular before he mounts it. Sounds like a good idea and he hasn't had any flats with this method. Anyone else try this? What about using something like Slime tire sealant?

I can't speak for its use in tubulars, but in the mtb world, Stan's is held in much higher regard than Slime.

oops sorry for the short reply but does slime work on latex? many tubulars use latex in the inner tube instead os butyl so I guess that might be a concern also I would imagine Stans or PitStop is lighter than Slime.......adding extra weight to a tubular wheelset seems pointless!

I have been using tubulars for a while now because the bike I have since 1999 came with it 2 tubular wheelsets. This year I built a bike up and I won 2 tubular wheelsets on ebay as whell, so I have been using them. Between the 2 bikes and my fixie -- I put 6K + plus already and I could hit 7K, this year. I am still using the same tubulars I had since December and November. yes I got flats but I repaired the one that flatted, 3 tires haven't. STANS made it possible for me to use them this long. I had been using them for 4 years. Before that I bought cheap tubulars but flatted some. This year my investment was less than 200 for 4 tires and they might go till spring. Not bad.

I've used it in the past. Can't really say that I flatted less, but it has sealed small pinhole size flats overnight a couple of times while waiting for me to change the tire. I am not using it now simply because I forgot to put it in the tire before mounting it. Would I do it again in the future? Sure. I do ride tubulars exclusively, so it is a little added insurance.

Slime is a waste in my personal opinion. Not to mention the gigantic mess it makes when it comes out squirting all over the place.
