You haven't given us much to work with. Planned use? Riding style?

But I'd imagine that the best bike you'll find will be a lightly used aluminum or steel hardtail with a front shock and Shimano XT components. It may take quite a bit of searching to find it, though. $500 won't buy you much off-road capability if you buy new.

How about posting some bikes you've been looking at, and getting feedback here?

Do you really think that what would be best for me would also be best for you?

Go shopping.

The best one would be one that works and you actually use.

Ask the folks in the Mountain Bike forum. You'll get a LOT of replies.

Not enough info. Front suspension, dual suspension or no suspension? For true mountain biking or primarily for road and hard trail use? If true off road riding then what type of terrain primarily? MTBs have diverged into several types each aimed at a different type of riding.

I just picked up a 1990 Trek 950 for $60. With new tires and cables the total investment so far is about $150. Using it as a urban assault vehicle but it was a good MTB in its day.

For $500 you are going to get a pretty minimal MTB if you buy new with lower end components, particularly the suspension fork.

I have a 2008 Specialized Rockhopper Pro Disc, 15" seat tube, was $1,200.00 new. It has about 80 road miles, no trail use, new / mint condition w/ new Crank Brothers Candy SL pedals, Ti cages. Burnt Orange, RockShox Recon Race SLite,Avid Juicy 3 SL, hydraulic brakes.
If this is your size, and you are interested, let me know.

I suggest used as well. I just picked up a Giant XTC2 for cheap locally used. Great deals can be found on Craigslist also.

I just bought a "Jamis Trail-X 3.0" MTB for $500 and I'm totally happy with it! It's got good enough componets (wheel's, derailiers, etc.) to handle the type of ridining I do, which is basic Cross Country, (XC). Now if your wanting to do BIG jumps, etc. your going to have to go to a Down Hill (DH) or Freeride (FR) type of bicycle and at least "double" that $500 at a minimum! At $500 there are several brands of MTB's that will do a great job at basic XC riding, while looking at several brands of MTB's in that price range the Jamis Trail-X 3.0 seemed to have "More" overall for the money than the others. FYI, YMMV.

I found the Gary Fisher Wahoo to be a good low priced MTB.
