Can't get away from that dude!

Seriously though, I think he should write for velonews. Good writer, experienced racer, interesting perspective. Plus,we might see more pictures of his many cats, which I can't get enough of.

Indeed. One only has to realize that the potential leaders of the most powerful nation in western society are arguing over hand size to conclude that we've got a few months left before things crumble into a heap.

Indeed. Looking good, @valygrl!

What the heck happened to the road going to Ward? It's a darn good thing there was one oatmeal raisin cookie left.

They are putting in a permanent fix for the damage from the 2013 flood. I haven't been past where it turns to dirt - how long was it torn up for?

It was dirt to just before the turn to Old Stage Road. Loose gravel is some spots. Not at all in my wheelhouse!

Just four weeks until my French trip, so today I loaded up the new tourer with the stuff I intend to take with me (total weight just over 11kgs, of which two are accounted for by laptop and kryptonite lock/cable) and took it out for a test ride. My main concern was to check that the gearing was OK. My road triple gives me a low gear of 25.3 inches, which is a bit higher than I'd normally have when loaded touring, and there are some serious mountains where I'm going.

So far, so good. My local training hill has short stretches at 10% and 11% and I was climbing them seated without going all the way through the gears, so that seems satisfactory. I was surprised anew (I always am, despite years and years of experience) by how much putting >10kgs on the bike, a relatively light touring load, slows me down. Watching me climb on this you couldn't get me mixed up with Nairo Quintana, but touring isn't racing.

On the other hand you can take off 10kgs in a few minutes. It takes me months to get rid of a couple.

Yes. On that hill today I was reflecting on how I could do with losing at least half the weight of my luggage from my enormous carcass. And wondering how people who are fat (I mean fat fat, not bike racer fat) manage to pedal up hills at all. They must develop quite impressive engines.

When I started back riding I was 200 lbs. I always tell people to beware of making fun of the fat guy. Several of the strongest racers I know started riding to get rid of a bunch of weight.

I gained three pounds on my vacation. It's all muscle I'm sure.

Crazy first day back at work, it was go-go-go all day long.

Also, odd thing: I got 12 calls over night from an unknown number in Bangladesh. Only one of them woke me up, I slept right through the other 11. I have since blocked that number. I chalk it up to the USAC security breach.

Maybe I need to gain a bunch of weight and then lose it?
