Just after the first of the year I have a business trip that will take me around the world. I should have a free day in the above cities. Does anyone know of a bike shop in any of these cities where I might pick up small useful items for classic bikes . I have been to Shanghia many times but this will be the first time thinking in terms of bikes instead of chinese DVD's. And I have not been to Inida before. I am thinking of a bell for my wife, small tools, leather bags for hanging on the saddle...... I am hoping in India I might find interesting accessories for my stable of mature Raleighs.

Sounds fun. I was just in Indonesia and found some fun stuff at local bike shops. I don't know those places, but you might drop a message on the flyingpigeonproject.org blog. This guy knows all about traditional bikes in China and I think lives in Shanghai, I'm sure he could point you in the right direction. His blog is great too, you might find something in his old posts.
Good luck on the trip, let us know how it goes in the bike department.

In Calcutta you will walk out of your hotel, turn right and walk half a block. A smoky, motorized, open taxi will pull up, and in a British tinged accent, but perfect english, the driver will ask you where you would like to go. You will explain you want an old, traditional bicycle shop, and he will seem to understand. Two hours into your journey, you will realize you are in over your head, and that you will never be heard of again.
I wish I was going with you!

Your trip to Indoniesai gave me the idea to look for bike bits.
Yes I expect taxi rides to be an adventure. In China I have had many. The best was when in my broken Chinese I gave the taxi drivers where we wanted to go and I was on the back of one motor scooter and my wife was on the other and we headed in opposite directions!
I just started a new job and it is a blast although cuts into my biking. This trip is Korea, Japan, Taiwan, China, HK, Signapore, India and Germany.
Next it is off to Russia and the Baltics.
But I am hoping to find some good British Bike Bits in India.
