We rode our tandem to Seal Beach, CA for a nice meal at our favorite restaurant, Thai on Main. As we left we spotted this couple that really likes to ride in style.

Did I mention that no one seems to mess with the bike as long as their dog is along?

My 9 year old son and I leaving San Jose on our first century ride together. 106 miles and all of it fun. Total ride time about 6:30 hrs.n The fully loaded photo is on a New Years Eve camp trip we did over to Big Basin State Park. We made the mistake of taking Mount Eden over to Sarataga and up Hwy 9. Next time it will be up Redwood Gulch. Gotta Love those granny's.

Mostly on our own, but sometimes with a club. We joined the Evergreen Tandem Club when we got our tandem a couple months ago, but so far our schedules have aligned only once.

We're getting ready to do our first family bike camping trip (wife & I on tandem, two daughters on their single bikes) next weekend, so last weekend we packed everything up for a hilly test ride. The 26-34 granny gear worked great!

Nice looking rig there. Not familiar with your tiny trailer, but I like it.

I climbed Redwood Gulch yesterday on my half-bike in the Sequoia Century. Here's a pic I took (while riding). I harkened back to when we did this on our tandem, when I had only a 27 cog in the rear. It was a fight for survival, and didn't lead to a hankering to repeat the feat, but with a child stoker.

Grade in pic is as steep as it appears.

The trailer is an Extrawheel Voyager: https://www.extrawheel.com/en/3/voyager_trailer/

I've seen the Extrawheel mentioned once or twice in the touring section. What do you think of it so far?

I really like it so far. Tracks well. Mostly supports its own weight, so rear wheel load on tandem is barely affected. Extra mass obviously has some effect when starting and stopping, but otherwise it doesn't have any noticeable effect on the handling of our tandem. Will use the same spare tube or tire that I'm already carrying for the tandem wheels. Uses regular panniers so I have the flexibility to move those panniers to another bike when my daughters get strong enough to haul their own stuff.

Yes, those are both good reviews that I read before buying. It should be noted that the "BOB vs ExtraWheel" review is talking about the old (original) version of the Extrawheel which used weird bags slung in a net. The new "Voyager" version which uses standard panniers is much better.

We're kinda off-topic here, so let's spin off a separate thread if anybody wants to discuss trailer details further. Thanks!

Our first organized event. The Collin Classic. 27 mile route. We are old and slow but it was a heck of a lot of fun. Even got the thrill of the lead peloton blowing by us in the last few miles. Interestingly, I did the 62 mile circuit last year on my solo bike and this was just as much fun, if not more. We switched from 23s to 28s when I put the Chukkers on. It feels like there is more resistance, but she says its a LOT less bumpy where she's sitting. We had a blow out about 10 miles in. Luckily there were a lot of good people there willing to help out when my CO2 cartridge didn't inflate the tube. *ugh*

On a related note. Due to the tandem, my wife is slowly getting more & more into cycling and getting more comfortable little by slow with riding on the road. We have started doing grocery runs on the slow rollers and she has expressed an interest in me building her a bike so she can commute a couple of times a month. She is also 100% engaged in the conversation when when I discuss what I'd like in the next tandem.

Yep. All because I put my ego in my pocket and focused on her needs instead of what I wanted it to be. And I owe that to you guys. So thank you all!

Good info, thanks. The Bike you sold me a couple of months back has been seeing some use. Got my wife out early in the morning for 20 miles yesterday. We stopped for breakfast at her favorite place on the way back. The longest ride she's done to date. Her legs were screaming at her the last 5 miles, but she did it! We did 14 miles around Benbrook lake Friday evening and she was thrilled to be out doing these things on a bike. It's good to get her out from in front of the tv.

Looks like a wonderful trip. Looking forward to hopefully doing tandem rides like that with my wife one day.
