What kind of rack and what kind of weight did end up hauling?
I have an Allez myself and have been considering using it for touring.

I used the axiom streamliner road rack. It threaded through the rear skewer and was set back a couple inches for clearance. It was only 30 dollars. Its definitely a cheap rack, not something I would try to do the transam with but it worked well for a 2 week trip. I was running a pretty minimal setup, probably 35-40 pounds of gear. It definitely was a bit squirrelly at times but it got better when i got the weight even on both sides. Definitely not ideal but very do-able.

This shot is becoming traditional: My loaded touring bike in Philadelphia 30th Street Station. This is the second bike I've taken this exact shot with; the last one was hit by a car.

Thanks. The weird yellow coloring is just how the photo came out, it's not photoshopped aside from brightening it a hair.

This thread is so inspiring, I wish I had the money and time to go on a tour this year... next year, it will happen!
On a side note: I've only been biking for a few years, but I used to think you guys were geektastic... "seriously, you guys are running on steel frames with racks, panniers AND fenders? Get with it: buy some composite, clip a few spokes and lose all that other crap (especially those fenders, dork)" Now I'm selling my carbon so I can afford some brazed Cro-Mo.
Maybe someday I will be cool enough to bolt some fenders on my rig... I deserve a wet ass for a bit after my prior snobbery.

Picture is in Central-Eastern Oregon, roughly between Service Creek & Mitchell--not out in the middle of nowhere, but quite isolated!

My pal and I just got back from a little ride in the desert area where finding water is no guaranty, so I was hauling 2.5 gals of fluids when I left home. Felt like down hill on the way home without all that water.

WOW, and I was just trying to remember if I had posted those yet or not.
The trunk bag is actually a repurposed Camelback. When I started all this non-sense, I didn't think it wise to buy an actual trunk bag, so I used the Camelback, which was quite nice because I could carry 3 liters of water with me during my first season of riding. I haven't used the 3 liter bladder since then, but I just haven't gotten off my lazy rear to get a real trunk bag, despite the fact that I've been hanging out at the lbs for almost two months straight now ( I get too occupied helping out with customers and bike repairs that I forget to buy things!)

Yes, that picture is at Channahon the other is near Ottawa or Marseilles. I saw your post asking about trail conditions the day we got back. We were out there the same weekend. We camped at Gebhard Woods in Morris and stayed at the water park in Utica (the carrot on the stick for my 8 year old). A great trip in spite of the clouds of mosquitos.
