bad damage to sidewalls
This isn't a question, just a story about how much of an idiot I can be. I noticed a weird bulge in the side of my tire last night and a closer inspection showed that the sidewall was fraying quite a bit: https://i.imgur.com/foaBWLi.jpg
I popped the tire off, and here's what the sidewall looks like from the inside: https://i.imgur.com/zu45BwE.jpg
I was riding on that tire for a while, and this was my daily commuting bike. I never noticed because there was dirt covering the damage. Don't worry, I bought and installed a new set of tires today and will be more diligent with checking for damage. It's pretty surprising that nothing happened on one of my rides.

Bulges are almost always indicative of casing failure, and casing failure is a sign of impending blow-out. Good that you replaced the tire.

Congratulations on getting just about every last mile possible from that tire.
So it's been a while since you had to repair a flat? That's when I notice tire wear. In my commuting days, I got at least one flat a month, sometimes two in one day.
