2017 CAAD12 disc frame opportunity

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

As a person who bought a couple frames and all the parts and built a couple bikes just to have the bikes I wanted, regardless of whether I spent a few dollars more or less ... I would naturally suggest you buy the frame and the parts you want and ride the bike you want.

If the frame is $400, the groupset is $800, the bike shop wants $300 for labor (just a guess) and the cockpit is $300 (also a guess), I'm at $1,800 before wheels. Now I can go straight to decent wheels instead of the cheap ones that come on the complete bike.

Maybe I've spent a little more overall, but the whole thing is fully custom and the frame color is better. I also get discs on a CAAD which I can't get under this config. The only remaining consideration is not getting the Hollowgram crank, because it's too expensive.
Hi,

If you can turn a screw you can do 80% of the work yourself. You only really need a professional to press bearings and glue tubulars. There are some specialty bike tools such as a good hex set and some torx bits for the odd stem maybe. Then you'll be under $2500 with great wheels. Also, get the big ticket items used and you'll be at a good place to spend more when the build calls for it.

So I have a question on the Ultegra groupset for the CAAD. The Internet retailer proposed a Wheels Manufacturing Eccentric BB to go with the Ultegra crankset. I think it's adapting a 24mm crankset to a 30mm BB.

I don't really understand what I'm dealing with here. Can someone explain what's an ideal setup for the crank and the BB? It doesn't have to be Shimano.

I think Cannondale uses a proprietary BB standard--PF-30, i think.

The spindle 9the shaft sticking out of the right, drive-side crank) is 24 mm on a Shimano crank, 24 tapering to 22 on SRAM and FSA (if I recall,) and Cannondale is just stupid. Wheels Mfrg. makes all kinds of adapters and replacement BBs and threaded BBs to avoid press-fit for those who prefer more weight and reliability. I'd go to their site and check out what you need. I am pretty sure unless you use approved Cannondale cranks, you will need to replace or adapt the BB.

looks like thse would be the replacement BBs https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-bracket...ano-black.html
https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-bracket...ram-black.html https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-bracket...ale-pf30a.html

As far as I can tell, the Eccentric BB is to convert to single-speed (https://wheelsmfg.com/bottom-bracket...nks-black.html)

I'd do an online chat with Wheels staff to sort things out.

Does anyone make a BB that doesn't require an adapter?

The first two I listedf don't need an adapter---they are the entire BB for a PF-30 shell but sized to take the slimmer SRAM or Shimano-standard cranks. None of the manufacturers that I know of make 30-mm cranks except whoever Cannondale owns---but if you want to use a Cannondale BB ....

Thing is this---if you want Ultegra, the Ultergra Hollowtech II BB only fits threaded frames, not press-ins. I believe you can get Shimano press-ft BB cups (I have never looked but I think I recall reading something in passing,) but in any case, you will need a BB, and it has to fit both the Cannondale frame's BB shell (designed around the bigger PF-30 BB) and the slimmer Shimano (or SRAM) crank spindle. You can google "Shimano press-fit bottom bracket" and see what comes up ... but as fasr as I know Wheels is one of the few that bridges the gap between Cannondale's useless proprietary BB and Shimano's excellent crankset.

An alternative would be using a crankset already sized for PF-30---You could google "Crankset 50-34 30 mm spindle" and see what come up.

I' do it, but the more I play at work, the longer I have to stay at work, and it cuts into riding time. My apologies.

Still trying to wrap my head about the BB issue. Called the Praxis people thinking they might have a good solution. Basically, they said they don't, and they don't even offer a crankset that works directly with the BB30a on the CAAD12. So it got me thinking: Are there any options that don't involve either a design compromise or paying boatloads of money? If not, then I'll stop here and buy a complete bike. Otherwise, I'll proceed on and continue with my project.

Thank you,
robert

Not sure what the issue is with the BB, if you are using Shimano Hollowtech crankset use bottom brackets made specifically for these. No adapters needed. The original BB30A bottom bracket used in assembled CAAD12 bikes use the Cannondale specific Hollowgram Si crankset, if you used this Bottom bracket then yes you need an adaptor for the Shimano Hollowtech cranks. Since you are building from scratch and need to buy and install a new BB then pick the one for the Shimano Hollowtech cranks right away.

You can either chose the cheaper Wheelsmfg.com BB or the more expensive C-Bear BB with ceramic bearings.
