I'd take the Golf GTI all day, every day. I have a Golf station wagon and I'd own the R version if it were available for sale in the US.
It's like the opposite of a mullet - party in the front, business in the back.

You totally missed my point. 105 and DA are both high performing group sets. The do the exact same thing except one is more refined and you pay for that. Same as the Vette and Ferrari.
By by the way I drive a GTI. Not because it’s cute. It’s the best value in a good looking affordable 4 door sports sedan.

Since they have discontinued the Touareg, nothing they make is quality so I wouldn’t consider it a value at any price.

I got your point and happen to agree with you as a vette is a legit sports car and a good comparison to Ultegra.

I have blown apart several DA rear freehubs. Luckily, Shimano replaced the bodies no questions asked, which is nice about their support of DA. The next set of wheels I get built, I am going to try Ultegra. I have a few pairs of RS 81 wheelsets and have been very happy with them.

The Tesla 3 is a good looking affordable 4d sport sedan. Plus, you get to skip the pump & it's faster than the GTI. (oh and, the company does not engineer systems to by-pass emission test & pollute the whole freaking planet just to make more $)

I have to disagree on that one. I don't want to start a debate on cars, but there are better choices rationally speaking. Of course, 99% of car owners buy emotionally, not rationally.

Dura Ace 7800 has a bit of a cult following and is very affordable. I love the feel, performance and especially the looks of my Dura Ace 7800 brakes.

It would also be nice if Shimano would re-introduce the polished/clear silver anodized finish in the current line of Dura Ace and/or Ultegra components. The last 10 years have been nothing but black - flat black, matte black, gloss black - pretty boring from a custom bike perspective if you ask me.

I still run Ultegra 6600 on two bikes and there's no question in my mind it's a beautiful groupset. I always wished I had 7800 as well though. It was so rare to see it around where I was riding back in the early 2000s so it had that extra exotic appeal as well as beauty.
That said, as you know, I maintain the FC-9000 is also right up there with the most beautiful cranksets ever made. I didn't make the same mistake with that one though and am fortunate to run it on one of my bikes. 😊

As mentioned above, most used 7800 cranks come with a ton of scratches and given we all agree (!) that we'd ride it for its beauty as much as its function, it seems like a waste of time to buy used at this point.

To answer the OP's question, I chose Dura Ace. Yes, they do the same job but the Dura Ace has a refined finish that just makes it look better. Though not part of the original question I to think the at Ultegra is the ultimate compromise.

This is why I want Shimano to suck it up and start offering BB30 variants. Oh, and while they're getting fancy with the anodising, they should bring back the tricolour. Neither has a snowflake's chance, though
