What's the upgrade you regretted the most?

Notices
Road Cycling “It is by riding a bicycle that you learn the contours of a country best, since you have to sweat up the hills and coast down them. Thus you remember them as they actually are, while in a motor car only a high hill impresses you, and you have no such accurate remembrance of country you have driven through as you gain by riding a bicycle.” -- Ernest Hemingway

What's the upgrade you regretted the most?

Too cold and wet outside, so I'm spending my usual morning java cleaning my bikes. And as I look around my workspace, there's probably enough parts to make another couple of bikes! Not all the parts and equipment were wise/good/sensible/whathaveyou purchases.

So, what's the one piece of upgrade you regret the most? Could be the frame, group, wheels, kit, gear, etc.

I'm looking at my POC Octal Aero helmet....nice, but not enough venting for hot summer rides.

Don't know if it is an upgrade but I've spent way too much money on shoes. I keep thinking the next best thing or a more expensive/cheaper shoe will be the Holy Grail that brings my feet bliss. Currently rotating through three pairs.

Regarding bike upgrades. Best thing I did was decide not to play the upgrade game and have my Tarmac built from the frame up exactly how I wanted it(although I did just add a Quarq power meter). Buying the bike I wanted in the first place was worth every penny.

This may be controversial since they are so hyped on this forum, but I regret spending the $$$ on my Arrundel sideloader cages. My 'otherside' cage was fine, but my sideloader (on the seat tube) ejected a bottle on my very first ride after 3 miles. I thought maybe the product was defective, since the cage on my downtube is just fine, so I sent it in for an exchange, and the exchange ejects bottles just as badly.

I've corrected the problem by affixing some rubber "grippers" on each side of the opening which has resulted in the cage being 100% ejection-free for over 1,000 miles, but I feel a bit duped having to bodge such an expensive piece of kit.

Probably the two bento boxes I have. One is a Profile Design ATTK box that is hard plastic and is beyond worthless since it's impossible to get anything in and out of it. The other box is a Zipp 3.0 Speed Box, which flops over and hits your legs pedaling out of the saddle.

Actually, the Eggbeaters I have are the worst. For the life of me, I can't clip into those things. Zero problem with SPD, SPD-SL, Look, etc.

Basically anything on a bike can be undone. Sometimes getting another bike is the problem. I had a really nice Y2K Cannondale R2000. Sold it when I got my heart diagnosis and figured I'd never ride fast again. I got it secondhand around 2007 for a bargain $400 and sold it for a similar price around 2010 or 11, have never seen another one for similar savings.

Tool purchase: Park rear derailleur hanger straightener. What was I thinking? I have never had a bent hanger in nearly 35 years of high-end road bike riding. If I ever do get one, I will go to the LBS with it. I will never use this tool.

I "upgraded" from Dura-Ace 7800, to SRAM Force(their high end groupset at the time), to DA 7900.

Finally I went back to DA 7800.

Went through 3 non-GPS cyclometers before I finally broke down and bought a Garmin 500. The total spent on those three easily totaled the price I paid for the 500.

The only upgrade I've ever done has been to buy a set of aero wheels; Flo 30 front and rear. I loved them at first but then realized they didn't really do much to enhance my style of riding so they were definitely a waste of money.

I've never been one to upgrade parts and that kinda cemented my decision. I'll put in my preferred saddle, buy my preferred tires when the stock ones wear out and sometimes add my preferred handlebar style but to change non-fit items for a supposed improvement in performance is not something I'm into.

if you still need a good pump, try this.

Product: Spin Doctor Team HP Floor Pump

If you ever have a problem with it, Performance will replace it.

I bought a good pump...

The others were so bad I didn't even want to give them away. They went in the trash.

I have a Silca pump too(purchased back in the 80s) but the replacement parts cost as much as the new pump.

I'm lucky to have 2 great pumps now, but I actually prefer the one from Performance.

Oh, my. That was a value purchase. I guess good pumps must be really hard to find. LOL

I have a cheap Specialized pump from 2004 that still serves me well. Even on the original 'Switch-hitter' head. I bought a Lezyne CNC pump as an 'upgrade' in 2010ish. First the head required new o-rings to seal after maybe one year of use. Then the gauge broke in such a way that you could no longer even pump with it. It has sat with that broken gauge ever since and the $40 Specialized pump keeps on going.

My LBS guy just sticks a 5mm t handle in the bolt and tweaks it how it needs to be. His 30 years experienced eye tells him where it needs to be.

I sometimes wish I'd gone for aero wheels instead of lightweight ones, but I usually remind myself that since I don't race, 1 or 2 mph doesn't really matter.
